Headlined by Top 15 prospect Daishen Nix, more than 100 of the top prospects on the West Coast and beyond converged on Firebaugh High for a series of showcase games.
I arrived a little late to the proceedings, but had enough time to see a couple of the games. While there, I saw quite a few kids from the class of 2021 who had standout performances. Here’s my list of the top of that group.
Pangos Premier 80 – 2021 standouts
Myles Phillips, 5-11 2021 PG, Bothell (WA)
Despite being slight in stature, Phillips did a great job getting buckets around the basket with either hand. He has a quick first step and slick handles, and can score it from midrange and three prolifically.
Corey Cofield, 6-4 2021 W, Birmingham
Cofield, the reigning West Valley player of the year, gives you 100 percent effort whenever he’s on the floor. His motor changes the game on the defensive end, where he locks down perimeter player and is difficult to contain on the boards. At this point, his defense and rebounding outpace his offensive skill set, which is on the come.
Lendl Henderson Jr., 6-6 2021 W, Bakersfield Christian
The nephew of former UCLA standout JR Henderson is a rapidly rising prospect in his own right. A long, fluid and bouncy athlete, Henderson can knock down the deep perimeter shot and score off the dribble through contact. His midrange skil set is also evolving.
Kenneth Simpson Jr., 6-1 2021 G, Chaminade
When you talk about “functional athleticism,” Simpson is Exhibit 1. Most guys can throw down dunks in transition, but Simpson finishes over guys in the half court, and with authority. He also has improved his shooting, especially off the catch. His ball handling continues to improve with each viewing.
Donjae Lindsey, 6-1 2021 G, Weston Ranch
Lindsey is an extremely low-key and productive guard who checks off all boxes. He operates well in the pick-and-roll, makes sound passes, and can score it from all three levels. And he does all of this with a quiet confidence. Defensively, he has active hands in the passing lanes and gives a tremendous effort on the ball. Lindsey is rising in the 2021 class.
