Some of the teams were missing guys for various reasons – notably many top players were up in Bellevue for the WIBCA showcase – but there were plenty of quality players in action. Here are some of the top wings we saw.
Josh Paul (2020 South Eugene) – Paul was one of the pleasant surprises for us at camp. We knew the 6-foot-4 rising senior was a solid player but when he matched up against Nate Bittle and Crater and posted 26 points, he is now clearly on the map. Paul kept Bittle off balance by not only draining deep threes with a good-looking jumper but also taking is strong to the hoop and finishing with both hands. Defensively he did the best he could to front Bittle and came up with a few steals. Paul clearly has the ability to play at the college level.
Brady Grier (2021 Westview) – Grier continues to emerge as one of Westview’s top all-around offensive threats. At 6-foot-4 he has the size to score around the hoop but he has the skill level to play on the perimeter. Grier was solid knocking down jumpers both on catch-and-shoot opportunities as well as also doing some damage off the bounce. As one of Westview’s bigger players, he was also able to help out down low on the boards.
Hunter Chubb (2021 Crater) – Based on what we saw at Oregon Team Camp, Chubb may be one of the top shooters in the state for the Class of 2021. He has a pretty, high-arching jumper that he gets off pretty quickly and while we didn’t track misses, he probably hit at least 40 percent from long range. Chubb isn’t just a standstill shooter either, he’s a decent athlete who was able to help out on the boards and defensively. Apparently the young shooter has been doing this all summer – Crater head coach Chris Schmerbach informed us that in one game at Region 7 in Arizona, Chubb dropped eight threes.
Logan Shaw (2021 Tualatin) – Shaw is a lanky 6-foot-4 swingman who played with enthusiasm on both ends of the floor. He showed the ability to create off the dribble but also step outside and hit the three. He was active on defense, playing the passing lanes and getting after loose balls, winning 50/50 possession battles.
Zeke Viuhkola (2022 West Linn) – Viuhkola, the son of West Linn head coach Erik Viuhkola, played a little late in the year las tseason but should have a larger role this season. He was a threat on the catch-and-shoot and showed that he could create off the dribble a little.
