Many of these players will stay and compete in the West Coast Elite Summer Classic with their grassroots teams when the viewing period begins the next day. Here are 5 prospects who I thought may have garnered some attention from DIII coaches and programs in attendance with their performances.
Ridley Ruth III 2020 Bellarmine College Prep H.S 6’2 (San Jose Ca)
This combo guard showed good point guard skills in pushing the ball hard up the court in transition, and finding open team mates with good passing. When there was an opportunity to attack the lane he was aggressive on the finish with either hand. In half court he moves with purpose and ready shoot or drive. He can shoot the 3pt shot or can get to the elbow for a mid-range shot. His on ball defense was good and he was often positioned right to help off the ball which enabled him to get quite a few steals that led to transition baskets. I like the name.
Deonte Hill 2020 San Lorenzo H.S 5’8 (San Lorenzo Ca)
This prospect got off to a slow start, it soon became obvious that this is the point guard who should be handling the ball. His confidence and speed allows him to get to any area on the court. He used it repeatedly to attack the paint area for finishes on his own or drawing the defense and unselfishly kicking out to shooters for good looks. He likes to finish with the same hand same foot move that throws bigger defenders off. His ability to be a pesky defender in the full court caused problems.
Donovan Sevilla 2020 Dougherty Valley H.S 6’0 (San Ramon, Ca)
Every time he stepped on the court he brought energy. He benefits from playing the game fast, he plays hard, and aggressive, always in attack mode. He seemed to excel in the transition game with several nice finish going to the rim. He can shoot 3’s too, he had 4 in his first game.
Sean McCarthy 2020 Tamalpias H.S 6’8 (Mill Valley Ca)
At times it looked like he was trying to do too much, but at the end of the day he was working hard on both ends of the court. He’s got decent footwork around the basket, he handles the ball okay for a big, he was an unselfish passer often finding cutters. He hit a couple of 3’s from the top and did well driving from the free throw line with one dribble. He knocked down his his mid-range from the baseline, he doesn’t mind mixing it up for rebounds. Needs to be more efficient in the post area. DII,III.
Riiny Riiny 2020 Archbishop Riordan H.S 6’9 (San Francisco Ca)
Up until this event, I would often see him spotting up in the corner for 3’s, not today! He looked more confident, he’s been working at improving his overall game. I saw him use the two dribble drive to attack the rim for a few dunks. He was a bit more determined to defend, block shots, and rebound. He’s thin, but has a long wing span.
