Monday kicked off its third year in the Hyde Park neighborhood. As gameplay started there were some really good players that caught the attention of PHI.
Phil Berryhill (Curie – 2021)
Long and lanky Phil was a tough guard to handle during games. The 6’4” wing had no problem dribbling through traffic and making plays for his team. With the ability to see over the defenders he made some spot on passes that made his teammates around him better. When the teams packed the lanes he made a couple of dribble pullups to keep the defense honest. A real eye opener on the first day of camp.
Roland McCoy (Kenwood – 2020)
With camp being held in his home gym McCoy was pretty comfortable on the court. Roland at 6’3” is an athletic guard who’s makes good decisions with the ball in his hands and without. With the ball he did a good jump getting to the rim and scoring in traffic after taking multiple hits. Off the ball he made several shots off catch and shoot situations and even mixed in a nice dribble pull up jump shot while drifting to the left side. McCoy had two really good performances on Monday.
Allen Woods (Perspectives – 2020)
Woods caught my attention with some really tough shots and the consistency of how he made them. Allen has a football body, but has good mobility on the court. In the game I observed him he made two really big shots with guys running at him from both sides. Not much of a ball handler Woods didn’t waste many dribbles as he made moves to the rim using hard shot fakes into a nice spin fade away that he also made several times. For my first time seeing him play I thought he was a fun player to watch.
Milan Williams (Brooks – 2020)
A pretty good guard who was running his court for most the day, Williams showed some toughness in the lane finishing with both hands while the opposing players tried to block him. Milan found ways to score when at times it seemed like the whole gym was guarding him. During his second game Willams team was down seven points he went and scored eight straight by himself to get the victory. A relentless competitor this 5’10” guard can play at someone’s college.
Sean Tang (Undecided – 2023)
Sean is a small lead guard who can light it up from anywhere on the court. He has big time range on his shot. So much so that the coaches asked their team to guard him as soon as he crossed half court. Tang made several shots from the volleyball line anytime he was left open. As an incoming freshmen this kid plays with a lot of confidence. Right now this kid is a shooting specialist with so much room to add more to his game. Will be fun to watch him in high school when he decides to pick one.
