This year the class of 2020 features several players who fit that mold. In this article PH takes a look at some of the best small guards in the state.
#7 Anthony Hunter 5’11 PG (Durango) – “Tone” Hunter is one of my favorite players to watch. He is a lock down perimeter defender that uses his low center of gravity to his advantage. He’s able to turn ballhandlers and use his quick hands to create steals. His overall quickness allows him to get buckets, either by pushing the pace in transition, or knocking down 3’s when defenders back off. He averaged 13 PPG and lead the Las Vegas Knicks in assist this summer on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit.
#18 Elijah Jackson 6’0 PG (Churchill County) – Not sure if I’m happy about having Jackson this high on this list. Because of him, I’m definitely going to have to make a trip out to Fallon this winter. Jackson, is one of the most explosive guards in the state. He gets to the basket at will, and has no problem finishing over the top of defenders. He’s also a winner, who led his school to the 3A state championship with a miraculous 3 pointer at the buzzer in the title game. He’s definitely a scholarship athlete, the question is in what sport? Currently he has offers from several D1 schools to play football.
#29 Kendall Burrell 5’10 PG (Bonanza) –Kendall Burrell fits that mode of a Las Vegas point guard to a T. He averaged nearly 20 a game last year while playing a do it all role for his Bonanza squad. He is lighting fast and has a quick trigger release. Burrell understands how to use his first step, and change of direction to create space and get off his shot. He’s a good 3 point shooter especially when using the dribble to get his rhythm. With University of Nevada All-Time assist leader Kevin Soares, who is also one of the winningest coaches in the state, taking over at Bonanza this year, Burrell’s ability to create plays for his teammates should increase mightily.
# 30 Donte Davis 5’10 PG (Liberty) – Davis is dope, however he does his damage a little differently than the rest. He doesn’t shoot a lot of threes, but has a great mid – range pull up game. He’s powerfully built, and gets through holes like a running back. Once he gets to the rim, he has the athletic ability and finishing versatility to complete plays over, under, and around larger defenders. He will be playing on a very good Liberty team this year, featuring PHN #2 player in the class of 2020 Julian Strawther.
#31 Travis Thomas 5’9 PG (Foothills) – Thomas is one of the most exciting small guards in the state. The lethal lefty is a knock down 3 point shooter, who can score in bunches. He loves to use the threat of his jumper, to keep defenders off balance and create a lane to the bucket. For his size his finishes amazingly well at the rim. Defensively he is a scrappy guard, who takes calculated risk to come up with steals. Really there is not much that separates him and Davis, and since they play in the same conference, watching them go at it this year should be a real treat.
