There were a lot of standouts during this weekend’s tournament, here is a list of some young talent with high ceilings:
Jaelyn Robinson / Palmer High School / 2022
A true floor general at such a young age, Jaelyn Robinson has the potential of being something special. He doesn’t just lead through his play, he’s a vocal commander as well. Robinson is clutch from the perimeter, draining open and contested three pointers at will. He’s not shy about driving into a crowd and making the tough layup either. On defense, he is capable of getting hard-fought turnovers and rebounds. His defensive footwork makes Robinson a tough defender to get by, and his confidence makes him a hard player to beat. The type of leadership and work ethic that has been instilled in young Robinson will make him a top tier player before his senior year.
Josh Speirs / Uintah High School / 2022
Speirs is an all-around athlete. This guard/forward is an instant standout on the court due to his style of play on offense and defense. Speirs was definitely the most dominant defender on the court out of the early games. He is a true lockdown player who can easily force his opponent into making an ill-advised decision. He is deceivingly fast, completely capable of covering serious ground which makes him a nuisance for any opponent with the ball. On offense, Speirs is a shooter with range. He can shoot from the outside, pull up in motion, and drive to the hole with no hesitation. Traffic isn’t a problem for Speirs, he can score at the rim with two defenders draped on him or sink a three with a hand in his face. He has a fearless demeanor that makes him a delight to watch whether he has the ball or not. With him being so young, expect Speirs to be in the spotlight for quite some time.
Anthony Montoya / Palmer High School / 2022
Montoya is an explosive guard who can set the tempo for his team through his play. His leadership is based off of leading by example. He is a high energy type of player who doesn’t miss on fast break opportunities. Montoya is an above average defender who is only going to get better. He is good at creating turnovers and forcing opponents to alter their game plan. Montoya has proven himself to be a true asset at such an early age.
Melvin Saffold III / Palmer High School / 2022
Saffold III is a young athlete with legitimate size who is embracing his role as a big as if it is his natural calling. His size makes him a powerhouse beneath the rim. His ability to go up and get rebounds, complimented with his shooting skills, allows him to dominate the paint. Because of that, Saffold III is a perimeter shooter’s security blanket. The most notable characteristic is not his skill or his size, it’s his attention to coaching. His willingness to follow instructions enables him to elevate his game in real time. Saffold III was the most coachable player of the day, making him worthy of the spotlight.
