Mile High Championship III: Class of 2021 Standouts
The Mile High Championship III showcased talent from some of Colorado’s top high school talent, as well as some out of state standouts. Many of these players increased their stock value, while others made a strong first impression. Here is a list of Junior guards worthy of the spotlight.
Julian Hammond / 6’1” / Cherry Creek
After watching him play, it is no surprise that Hammond is the #2 ranked player in his class on the Prep Hoops Colorado rankings list. He was definitely the most well-rounded athlete on the court. He is dominant on defense and meticulous with the ball, making Hammond the type of guard who can control the pace of the game.
Jalen Weaver / 6’5” / Smoky Hill
As expected, Weaver did not disappoint. He was putting down shots from the perimeter, making hard-fought layups, and showing off his electrifying dunk skills in style. His defensive game is precise and relentless, forcing turnovers and blocking shots. Weaver can go from being a quiet scorer to a show-stopping baller in a blink, no wonder he’s ranked 3rdin the state.
Kendale Johnson / 6’5” / George Washington
Johnson, the 5thranked player in the state, is a serious shooter. He is a versatile player with a big frame. He has a nice shot from the perimeter and his size allows him to get aggressive at the rim. His length makes him the type of defender that is tough to get around, a true force to be reckoned with.
Skylar Wilson / 6’5” / Eaglecrest
Wilson came to put on a show and that’s exactly what he did. He had more than a few high-flying moments and even set up his teammates with ally-opp assists. Wilson has a jumper that lets him shoot over a tough defender, the length to dunk in traffic.
Teon Thomas / 6’0” / Vista Peak
Thomas stole the show with his game-winning full-court buzzer beater. He is a dynamic that can shoot over height. His defensive skills give him the ability to go up and block shots at the board, as well as in space. Thomas is a guard with a limitless shooting range and strong defensive characteristics.
Mekhi Murphy / 6’5” / Eaglecrest
Murphy is a player with great height and decent size. He is a player with position interchangeable qualities. He can play the role of a big while being a threat as a distance shooter. Murphy’s success on offense is based on his ability as a shooter and his ability to set the tempo.
Joshua Allan / 5’9” / Elkins (Arkansas)
Allan is the embodiment of the blue-collar mentality. What made him stand out the most was his work ethic. With a fearless attitude and unstoppable motor, he showed real promise when matched against opponents with serious D1 talent. With his unwillingness to slow down and refusal to accept defeat, Allan is the type of player coaches truly admire.
