He had a strong June playing with his high school team and then played well during the July travel team season with Young & Reckless which has opened up more avenues for him on the recruiting trail. The 6’10” mobile big man can stretch the floor as well as finish as a rim runner in transition. Defensively is where his biggest value might be at the next level with how he protects the rim and switches in ball screens.
PHI caught up with Mitchell to get the latest on this recruitment over the weekend at the PrepHoops Hard Work Region Finals!
“It has been going well. I picked up three offers from Maryland, Xavier, and Minnesota.”
Mitchell expanded on each of the three new schools that have extended scholarships.
Xavier
“I like that they are in the Big East. That is a conference that not many people get offers from. I feel real special getting an offer from Xavier.”
Maryland
“I like Maryland and how they are long and lanky. It is something that fits me perfectly.”
Minnesota
“They like to push the ball and share the ball. They play as a family.”
Several other new schools have expressed interest after his recent play.
“Miami, Ohio State, and Ole Miss.”
What schools does he feel are making him a priority?
“Maryland. Minnesota has been contacting me a lot. South Florida, Tulsa, and Colorado State have been making me a priority.”
Although he is starting to land high-major offers he isn’t just looking to go to the biggest school.
“I am still going to have a couple mid-majors in my cut list. Obviously everyone wants to go power five, but if it is the right fit at the mid-major or mid-major plus I will have to go there.”
When is he looking to set up his official visits?
“I am trying to wait until late August and September to set up visits.”
Mitchell talked about his timeline for making a call.
“I would like to decide before the season.”
What is he looking for a school?
“To be able to play my game. Play as a family. I want to touch the ball. I don’t want to say that I will play immediately because that is not something that all players get. That is just the 1% guys. If I get that opportunity I will definitely take it.”
