Over at the West Coast Championships, there was an intense game between two hometown rivals from Louisiana who flew all the way out to the desert to match up in a Semifinal game. Throughout the day several Las Vegas players shined. Here are the standouts from bracket play:
Jayvon Fisher 2019 Louisiana Rockets West Coast Championships – Fisher balled out for a super athletic Louisiana Select team. The 6’0 powerfully built point finished through contact and displayed a smooth shooting stroke. He’s a knock down shooter off the dribble as well as in catch and shoot action. He led LS to a tough Semifinal win in a physical game over their neighborhood rival, Louisiana X Factor.
Dante Davis 2020 Vegas Elite National Las Vegas Main Event – The 5’10 Davis is a high IQ combo guard with a quick first step. He has a good mid -range game and can create space off the dribble. If he gets his shoulder even with the defender he can explode through holes like a running back and finish at the rim. Good vision, and he’s comfortable playing on or off the ball. Played well in two games against LA Elite and SD Attack.
Nathan Van 2020 Vegas Elite National Las Vegas Main Event – Van is a Magician with the ball. I was interested in seeing him in person, and he was even better than I expected. The 6’2 Point Guard has a terrific handle, and is a special passer. In fact, you have to see him in person to believe some of the deliveries he makes. He has great vision, elite anticipation skills and places the ball on time and on target to his teammates. He doesn’t take a lot of jump shots, but has several creative finishes off the drive. Van is a Scholarship player who is receiving interest from schools like UC Irvine, Cal Poly and George Fox University. If he can improve his outside shooting, he may be going bigger places. Played well in a win over LA Elite and in a loss against SD Attack.
Kobe Busch 2020 South Dakota Attack Las Vegas Main Event– One of the top players in South Dakota, the 6’4 Busch has prototypical size and strength to play the 2. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, however, he has good shot mechanics. He also has a good enough handle and IQ to run some point in a pinch. Right now he has several D2’s interested in him. He helped SD Attack reach the 17U Semifinals.
De-Andre Hypolite 2020 Louisiana Select West Coast Championships – Hypolite is a bouncy 6’2 guard who is on the radar of several programs. He’s looking to attack the basket first, and is relentless on his drives. Not going to beat you with jumpers right now, but if he can become more consistent with his outside shooting, the game should open up for him. He helped Louisiana Select advance to Sunday’s Final of the West Coast Championships.
Matthew Mors 2021 SD Attack Las Vegas Main Event. If you’re not familiar with Mors, get used to hearing about him. The 6’7 Forward from South Dakota is shooting up National Rankings. He’s a big strong physical player with a tremendous skill-set. Good athlete, good first step, and a surprisingly quick second jump. He is a monster on the block, commanding a double team whenever he touches it, plus he has the ability to step out and knock down 3’s at a high rate. He’s got several Big 10 schools interested and the gym fills up quickly with college coaches whenever he takes the floor. At this point it seemed like many were there to be seen by him, as much as to see him. He’s a high major recruit who has been the best player in the tournament so far. He helped lead SD attack to Sunday’s 17U Semifinals.
