NBA Stylistic Comparison: 2014 Pelicans Tyreke Evans
College Projection: D3-NAIA.
Bouncy. Quick feet. Kaleb is currently just a touch under 6-foot-2 and likely to grow just a little more.
Weaknesses: Ball-handling, high motor*, scoring with either hand, scoring on all three levels (close), playing above the rim (very soon)
For Kaleb Bunton, it is imperative he more consistently devote full energy. Combines and camps do have intense moments staggered throughout, but Bunton doesn’t assert himself fully throughout. It is not for lack of conditioning. He is a very solid athlete, both aerobic and anaerobic.
Bunton’s positives are hops, energy, mid-range shooting, and all-around athleticism. Kaleb scored in a variety of ways during the June event. He is already above average shooting from 10-12 feet out. The outside shot is coming along and might be a plus weapon too.
Few guys are able to hit three pointers off of a dribble, but Bunton just might get there with consistent work. His feet are better than most and he shoots a consistent ball. A small but important detail, Bunton’s elevation on the jumpshot gives him a little longer shooting window. He can get over similarly-sized guards for rebounds or to simply finish off a shot in tight. That special bounce won’t get him over the outstretched arms of college 4/5’s, but he will be tough to block otherwise.
Further, the springy wing exhibits above average change of direction. His sprint time (3/4 court) hovered around 3.20, good enough for top 3 in the event. Coupled with his impressive vertical from September 2018, Kaleb is veering towards plus defender, plus guard rebounder, complimentary AAA scorer as soon as this fall.
The junior season will be a monumental year for Kaleb and his development this next six months will be key.
