Here are the Juniors who have boosted their stock in my eyes over the course of the month.
Ben Johnson, Lexington Catholic – Ben is going to be hard to top as the #1 player in our next 2021 rankings update (coming soon). He had a strong spring AAU and followed that with dominating performances all June long. After the Collins event, coaches were buzzing with Johnson’s abilities as a scoring guard and fearlessness when attacking the rim against multiple high major big men for Calvary Christian out of Florida.
Jaden Rogers, Fern Creek – Rogers is right on Johnson’s heels as the top player in the class right now. As of today, Rogers is the only player in the class with a scholarship offer and we should expect Jaden to get more offers over the 18 months or so before committing to a college. Jaden has the potential to play at a high major level in college.
Anthony Woodard, Logan County – In a class full of kids who don’t play hard enough, “Rooster” plays with a tremendous motor and doesn’t take plays off. He’s slowly becoming a better primary ball handler and less of a wing. Regardless of position, Woodard gets things done on the court and plays super hard. Traits that any college should look to add.
DeAjuan Stepp, West Jessamine – Stepp has long been a kid that let me wanting to see more. He’s finally turning the corner. Getting to play as more of a ball handler and scoring wing, DeAjuan has good size and length and can be a difference maker on both ends of the court. As he’s maturing, his game keeps getting better and Stepp is a kid to track over the next two years.
Zek Montgomery, Fern Creek – Zek is becoming one of the best players in the 2021 class and a kid I can see playing at the D1 level. Montgomery has stretched his jump shot further and is now a credible threat from beyond the three point line. Combine that with his length and athleticism and Zek is going to be a top 10 kid in the next rankings update.
Trace Flanary, Bowling Green – Trace is a type of kid who will be the best possible player he can be. He works hard on his game and plays with a good motor and is the good type of crazy to have on your team. Flanary is fearless and tough and brings an edge to Bowling Green’s team that they have been lacking since Terry Taylor graduated.
Conner Cooper, Bowling Green – Cooper is another player who looks ready for a bigger role for the Purples this season. After averaging 6 points per game as a Sophomore in a limited role, Conner seems primed to be a double figure scorer and could go for 20+ multiple times this season for a loaded Bowling Green team.
Josh McGuire, Knott County Central – Josh is another player who continues to improve his game. He’s never going to be the quickest player but McGuire is big and strong and uses positioning and technique to be a good rebounder and has shown the ability to knock down jump shots from 15-18 feet. Look for him to be a go to player for the Patriots this season.
