Johnell Davis is one of those “do it all” kind of players. His tenacity and ability to use his quick feet and hands on defense make him one of the best defenders in the country on-ball. He has great length at the guard position and brings the energy to both ends of the floor.
Davis averaged 8.3 points/game, 7.7 rebounds/game, 2.2 assists/game, and 1.6 steals/game in 23.3 minutes/game this year for the Indy Heat on the EYBL circuit. Along with his ability to be one of the elite defenders in the 2020 class, Johnell is also one of the best rebounding guards in the country. He rebounds the ball well on both backboards and has the savvy to finish put-backs on the offensive end.
Another area that he has improved quickly is his strength and athleticism. He proved that he can compete at a high level and handle the ball with his newfound strength and quickness. The added strength has made him more lethal with his driving ability. Johnell has always been a good finisher around the basket with both hands but used to get knocked off his drive. Now, he finishes through and over contact around the basket with strength and explosiveness.
Johnell is one of the most poised guards in Indiana with the ball in his hands and has shown the ability to control his change of pace over the last year. He gets downhill with the best of them but has shown that he can use his jumper as a more consistent weapon and get defenders off-balance but changing pace and direction.
Davis turned quite a few heads at the end of the summer when he took advantage of his opportunity to play at the Peach Jam. One of the first things of note was his 15 rebound performance that got his name circulating. His toughness and willingness to do the little things will be a few that carry him through his collegiate career.
He currently holds offers from Florida Atlantic University and Northern Illinois University. With his intangibles, ball-handling abilities, and basketball IQ, Johnell may very well be an impact player as soon as he hits campus. Given time, there will be a few more programs that are going to add to his list of offers.
