The Cavaliers went 18-7 in 2018-19 before falling to Miami Killian in the regionals. Delgado and Bryant headline a group of sophomores and juniors that return for coach “Tico” Govea.
“Isiah [Middleton], Kuran and Romulo all 3 of them are freshmen going to be sophomores and they started for me last year,” Govea said. Then add 2021 point guard Desmond Romer — a transfer from Miami Jackson — and 6-3 2021 Walter Daniels and Gables will be a tough out.
The 6-foot-2 Delgado (pictured) often is positioned in the middle at the top of the circle for Govea. The left-hander is a smart facilitator and shows excellent poise for his age.
Delgado has a soft shot, is at his best at the mid-range, but can step out and hit 3s. He’s a very good free-throw shooter.
“I’ve gotten some interest from Northern Arizona University,” Delgado said. “That’s all my coach has talked to me about. But he’s told me I have some other ones, too.”
The Coral Gables squad went to the Frank Martin Team Camp in South Carolina and to the Lynn University Team Camp this past month. Gables will be competing at AAU Nationals July 7-11 and then at the FIU Team Camp in August.
Asked what will be important to him in picking a college, Delgado said: “Now it’s all about education. I mean it’s everybody’s dream to play in the NBA. It’s mine, also to go pro. But I’ve got to worry about my education first. So I have to look for education first off, second off I want to play for a winning program, try to get my name out and then just ball out.”
The 6-4 Bryant played the No. 3-5 as a freshman but said he can play the No. 1 through 5 this season. His strengths are his play in the post and his mid-range game.
“Big strong kid,” Govea said. “He averaged 10 [points] and 12 [rebounds] for a freshman. He had games that he scores. He scored 31 against Fort Lauderdale.”
“Last year I was mostly a mid-range,” Bryant told me. “I want to be able to have everything in my game. So I want to have more confidence when I am pulling up and shooting 3s. I want to be able to take the person off the dribble. I want to do it better. I can do it but this summer I am definitely going to be in the gym working on that.”
The 5-11 Romer is looked upon to be the floor general and play defense.
Daniels is a slasher and provides intensity.
Middleton can run the floor, provides energy, is a factor on defense and hits the boards.
“We should be one of the top teams just because of our size, our athleticism,” Govea says.
