Transferring has become about as common as star NBA players demanding trades from their respective teams after signing max contracts. The window that these players have to reach their ceiling in terms of college recruitment can be small. Some decisions are based upon simply going to a better school for academics, while others make moves to maximize their exposure as much as possible.
For this series, we’ll take a look into some transfers in the MIAA A Conference.
Noah Batchelor | 6’7 | Glenelg Country
Batchelor’s decision to transfer from St. Maria Goretti to Glenelg Country was one that moved the needle, especially for the long term. Batchelor contributed for a very good and senior heavy Goretti team. With his continued development this spring with Mid-Atlantic Select, he’ll look to be an impact player right away for Glenelg. At 6-foot-7, he brings size, athleticism and versatility both offensively and defensively.
Byron Ireland | 6’2 | St. Frances
Ireland was regarded as a top three player in Anne Arundel county last season. He built a reputation for being a quick and hard-nosed guard that can score in bunches. Adjusting to the MIAA level usually takes time, but fortunately he has been playing with St. Frances in events throughout the spring and summer. He adds quality depth to an already loaded roster that is set to partake in a gauntlet of a schedule.
Julian Reese | 6’9 | St. Frances
Reese has one of the highest ceilings in the area with his combination of skill and length. The 6-foot-9 lefty can play inside and out offensively. He is heady defender that can recover quickly and block shots when he gets stuck on a guard out on the perimeter. For St. Frances, Reese is a massive get because he brings the size they desperately needed when playing against other nationally ranked opponents.
Wade Jackson | 6’1 | St. Vincent Pallotti
Jackson transfers from Gonzaga (DC) to join forces with his old teammate Anthony Blunt. Blunt made the move from Gonzaga to SVP last summer and was a standout. Jackson hopes he can do the same with his ability to score and be a dynamic play maker. The duo have meshed well in the live periods during June. SVP will be an undersized team, but Jackson and Blunt will spearhead a skilled, tough backcourt that forces opponents to play uptempo and wear them down with consistent ball pressure from their full court press.
Jahmal Banks | 6’5 | St. Frances
The rich get richer. St. Frances added Banks right before the second live session in June. Banks will attend SFA and play both basketball and football, where he starred at his former school in Bishop O’Connell. Banks will pair with LSU football and basketball commit Jordan Toles to form one of the most strong and athletic duos out. Banks brings great size at 6-foot-5 to the wing slot. He can score consistently around the rim through contact and has improved as a play maker in creating shots for others. Banks will come in handy when playing against nationally ranked wings with size, as he’s is a tenacious defender that moves his feet well.
