Illinois’ Washington Community High School has a gem with this sharpshooting and good-sized hybrid player. He was flashing the prettiest shot we saw all day at Kennedy High in Bloomington, and had the size to get off the shot at will. Vanderheydt hit four 3s (and got fouled on another) en route to scoring a game-high 18 points in a narrow loss to top-seeded Team Factory Gold.
Max Lampe, 6’7 PF (Iowa Dynasty 17u)
A Cedar Rapids Prairie big man, Lampe caught our eye last summer as a 16u Dynasty player, and has molded himself into a more agile playmaker since that time. It’s not often you tag a post with the playmaker label, but Lampe’s passing was on point Friday and he’s certainly one of the best passing post players we’ve seen in the last five years.
Joey Goodman, 5’11 PG (Iowa Dynasty 17u)
Iowa City West is never without a solid point guard to run the show, and this season , it appears that Goodman could be the guy for the Trojans. He’s a heady, patient and poised floor general, who seldom takes bad shots and has the type of court-vision that can catch an opponent off guard.
Garrett Pietnok, 6’5 F (Iowa Dynasty 17u)
Another Cedar Rapids Prairie rising senior who impressed on Friday, Pietnok caught our eye last summer as a tall slender stretch floor that could score from all three levels. Things were a little different when we saw him yesterday; he’s added 25 pounds to his 6’5 frame and was scoring efficiently around the rim, using his added strength well to sometimes go through his opponent.
Nick Pavlovic, 6′ PG (Full Package-Dmitry)
An Illinois product, Pavlovic was certainly one of the more dynamic guards we saw Friday in Bloomington. The Glenwood North rising senior has a quick first step, some slick handles and a nice jumper that he can create for himself. His ability to get by his opponent and finish creatively at the rim was impressive.
Caleb Flatten-Moore, 6’6 C (Iowa Mavericks-Huisman 17u)
From Oconomowoc in Wisconsin, Flatten-Moore was without question a standout player in Iowa Mavericks-Huisman’s impressive come-from-behind win over Minnesota Heat in a 17u gold bracket first-round match up. He’s got both size and a motor that allowed him to excel around the rim. Flatten-Moore finished with a game-high 19 points in that win.
Sam Wellman, 6′ G (Iowa Mavericks-Husiman 17u)
If there’s one player on the Mavs that catalyzed an impressive second half comeback against Minnesota Heat, it was this Davenport North sharpshooter. Wellman canned four 3s alone in the second half, each one as timely as the previous. He was also getting to the rim and exploiting the hard closeouts after he’d established himself as a serious threat from deep.
Greg Brown, 6’5 G (Team Factory Gold 16u)
Perhaps the most college-ready player on this list, Brown is a rising junior from Burke High in Omaha and with his combination of vision, passing, ball-handling, slashing and shooting it appears that he’ll be a guy who can rack up a slew of Division I offers before too long.
