This collection of standouts from Mid Missouri won the championship at the Chicago Summer Jam last weekend. They defeated Team 1848 55-54 in the championship game after rallying from an early double-digit deficit. This is a solid group of players who have experienced a lot of success at the high school level.
Here is a look at the Mid-Mo Elite 17U:
Eric Northweather 6’8″ Blair Oaks: A versatile post player who gets it done at both ends of the court. He is very skilled around the basket with his post moves and nice touch around the basket with both hands. He has excellent mobility and will get down the court for rim runs for dunks and layups. His ability to knock down 3-pointers adds another big element to his game. He led Blair Oaks to the Class 3 state quarterfinals last season.
Brennan Jeffries 5’11” Jefferson City: A very poised and savvy point guard who scored 17 points in the championship game, including the game-winning layup in the closing seconds for the victory. He is an excellent ball handler who will distribute and take care of the basketball, but he is also an excellent 3-point shooter. His pull-up jumper is also nice.
Tre Kempker 6’3″ Eugene: An excellent wing player who can play multiple positions on the floor to help his team. He has good size and handles the ball well enough to be a playmaker on the perimeter, but he also scored on some strong takes to the basket. His offensive game has continued to improve with the emergence of a 3-point shot, which he hit two in the championship game. He leads a very strong program at Eugene.
Evan Schneider 6’6″ Ladue: The only player on the team that is not from Mid-Missouri, Schneider joined the team last summer and was a welcome addition with his muscle and toughness around the basket. He plays inside with a bull-in-a-china shop mentality. He posts up strong and takes up space and scores on drop steps and jump hooks and he will also throw down a dunk in traffic. He played a big part in Ladue’s run to the Class 4 Final Four last season.
Coby Williams 5’10” Versailles: A high-scoring combo guard who plays off the ball quite well with his scoring ability and how he can move without the basketball. The lefty has good 3-point range and he will also take it to the basket into the land of the giants despite not being very big himself. He led Versailles to the Class 3 district championship last season.
Reece Gilmore 6’1″ Southern Boone: An energizer bunny who is always looking to play fast and push the tempo whenever he has the ball. He does a good job of getting into the lane on the bounce and he also has a good defensive presence with his speed and athleticism. He has been part of a Southern Boone program that has been consistently winning more than 20 games a season.
Johnny Bernt 6’3″ Father Tolton: An excellent perimeter shooter who can come off the bench and change the game in a heartbeat with his ability to knock down a number of 3-pointers. He stretches the defense and keeps the pressure off of the big boys inside.
Ross Struemph 6’7 St Elizabeth: A very solid post player who does a good job with the fundamentals from catching and keeping the ball up to finish around the basket. His shooting touch is good as well. He was a Class 1 All-State performer after leading St Elizabeth to a third place finish in the state tournament.
Sterling Desha 6’2″ Jefferson City ’21: The youngest player on the team as a 2021, the talented wing player brings a real scorer’s mentality when he enters the game. When he gets the ball he’s looking to get downhill and get to the basket, and he’s a good finisher.
