Under-the-Radar Guards (Part II)
Obadiah Curtis, 2020, Fresno Edison
Curtis is a long, rangy athlete who covers a ton of ground with minimal dribbles. The 6-foot-3 scoring guard has an explosive first step and uses his long strides and leaping ability to get to the front of the rim and finish. The rising senior has the potential to be a big time perimeter defender because of his physical tools and the toughness in which he plays with.
Fresno Edison senior-to-be Obadiah Curtis was a tough cover at the Fullcourt Press All-West Camp due to his high motor and attacking mentality.Addyson G’Bye, 2021, Capistrano Valley Christian
G’Bye stood out not only because of his interesting last name, but because of the way he controlled the tempo of a game in a setting which otherwise lends to wild, up-and-down basketball. The South Orange County junior wasn’t the quickest or most explosive guy on the floor, but he got to his spots when he needed to with change of speeds and keeping guys on his hip. G’Bye made defenders pay when they went under screens as he knocked down perimeter shots with regularity.
Justyn Hunter, 2020, Fairfax
Toughness on both ends of the floor stands out regardless of the setting and Hunter brought plenty of that to Cerritos College. The 6-foot-1 senior-to-be can guard positions 1-3 because of his strength coupled with his defensive IQ. Hunter displayed a fearless mentality when attacking the basket and finishing in transition.
Khristian Holmes, 2023, Fresno
Another guard of the Mike Hill training lineage, Holmes is a relentless attacker of the basket and finisher in the paint. The 5-foot-10 scoring guard uses his sturdy frame to hold off defenders when driving to the paint and can either ride them to the rim and finish through contact or pull-up and knock down a jumper.
Nathan Medina, 2022, Valley Christian
Medina stuck to his strengths all weekend long and it resulted in him draining a high percentage of his long range set shots. Medina, who stands at 6-feet-1, has as fundamental of shooting mechanics as you’ll find and doesn’t need much time or space to get off a clean look.
Ashlan Morris, 2022, Clovis
We saw Morris in the spring at Trigonis’ Best of SoCal Showcase and what stood out about him there carried over to the All-West Camp. Morris is a fundamentally sound player with a high basketball IQ and careful decision making instincts. He might not have provided the flash and excitement as some other prospects at the event, but you had to appreciate his approach to the game.
