BELLFLOWER, Ca.—Head Coach Matt Dunn has continued the tradition as the St. John Bosco Summer League attracts many of the elite teams in Southern California. Each and every year there always appears to be a few prospects who take their game to a new level and this year was no different as a pair of 2021s in 6-foot-4 Scotty Washington and 6-foot-5 Peyton Watson are the latest examples.
RJ Smith (Damien)
2022, WF, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
RJ Smith will be the next stud out of Damien.Joel’s Take: The next stud coming up in the Damien program appears to be this guy and there are others behind him. Blessed with broad shoulders, long arms, and nice dose of athleticism, Smith is one of the better prospects in his class. He can play inside-and-out due to his rebounding prowess, scoring instincts in the paint, and touch. He needs to improve his 3-point shot, but overall his game is evolving.
Luke Haupt (St. Augustine)
2020, PF/WF, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Haupt plays the point forward position and he does it quite well. The skilled lefty is a savvy passer, has improved his ball handling, and has become a more productive scorer. He still needs to improve his range on his shot, but he’s a high IQ basketball player and a winner.
Brace Dottin (Harvard-Westlake)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: “Motor” is the first thing that comes to mind when describing Dottin. He has a solid frame with good length and he is always in attack mode. He can score from anywhere on the court, but “consistency” will be the key in his development going forward. Due to his effort he is a productive rebounder for his position and he communicates well on the court.
Joshua Camper (St. John Bosco)
2020, PG, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Camper is yet another player who leaves it on the court. At both ends of the floor he “digs” in and produces. He can blitz down the court and nail the 3-point shot or finish in the paint due to his relentless “will”. His head is always up and his passing is tight. Defensively, he gets into his defender and he slides his feet well.
Ralph Cruz (Long Beach Poly)
2022, WF, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more intriguing prospecest I saw in the Bosco Summer League was Cruz. The slender lefty does a little bit of everything on the court. He can knock in shots within 15-feet, rebound in and out of his area, and he’s a willing passer. He is one of the better looking prospects on the Jackrabbit young roster.
