Mainland coach Joe Giddens thinks it may be coming as early as next week.
“I’ve got some teams that are going to pull the trigger soon,” Giddens said Sunday on the final day of the Florida High School Team Camp at DS Sportsplex in Deerfield Beach. “They told me they are going to pull the trigger and offer him.”
The 5-foot-11 2020 guard has been hearing from Old Dominion, Bethune-Cookman, Embry-Riddle, Stetson and Wyoming to name a few. Sunday, Sears lit up Miramar for 21 points in a 63-59 victory over the Patriots.
Sears is the definition of a leader. He runs the team, can score, defends and takes charges.
“He knows what the coach thinks,” Giddens said. “Prime example: I called time out sometimes during the game last year, he knew who was in foul trouble, how many fouls we needed, what player did what. He’s one of those type of guys. He’s smart.
“I think it’s going to get even higher,” Giddens added of the level of offers coming to Sears, “because he’s on the No. 6 team in the country AAU, too. CP25. He’s their starting point guard.”
Two freshmen to watch
A ninth-grader that should definitely be on your radar is Shahbaz Elite’s Jeremy Torres, who will be a freshman at Montverde Academy. Torres is a talented 5-8 point guard. Another intriguing 2023 prospect: 6-6 Justin Johnson. Johnson is not sure which high school he will attend but sources tell me Carol City is the leader in the clubhouse.
Second option at North Miami
North Miami has added 6-3 2020 Veelesk Avin — a transfer from Miami Dr. Krop. Avin provides the Pioneers with more scoring punch to go with 6-5 2020 Carlos Hart. Avin averaged 19.6 points and 5 rebounds as North Miami went 3-0 over the weekend. “I want to play with Carlos because we go back from when I was younger,” said Avin, who plays travel basketball with DSBG. Hart scored 18 points, 11 and 16 in the three games. In the final contest vs. Fort Lauderdale High, he posted 16 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
Vertus, Taylor with Flying L’s
Fort Lauderdale High coach Rich Belton is looking to build chemistry with a new group. Two of the new faces over the weekend were 2020s Alex Vertus and EJ Taylor, who played at Cardinal Gibbons last season.
Dibwa to post-grad
6-10 Ange Dibwa helped Miami Schoolhouse Prep reach the state tournament as a junior in 2018-19. He said Sunday he will be playing with Miami Triple Threat post-grad this coming year. … Siena has called about Schoolhouse Prep 6-7 2021 Jehu Wright and plans to watch him during the July live period, according to Triple Threat director Michael Guilbaud.
… Stranahan went 3-1 on the weekend. Its one loss was to Bartow.
