1. MD Spartans (3-0)
Last week’s ranking: No. 1
Last week’s game: win over Rams
The Spartans earned another win last week to keep their record flawless. It was a well-balanced effort throughout, but 2021 Marlon Lewis spearheaded their attack for the third-straight week with 13 points and five rebounds. 2022 Nigel Pearson chipped in with 11 points and was key as a scorer in transition.
2. EBA (3-0)
Last week’s ranking: No. 2
Last week’s game: 51-46 win over the Bluebirds
2020 forward Jordan Strickland continues his dominance in summer league as he led EBA with 17 points and 11 rebounds. They also got a big performance from 2022 guard Jadyn Williams. Williams finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists. As a team, EBA has looked consistently strong. With Strickland’s consistency and 2020 guard John Godinez running the show, if they can get a solid outing from just one more player, they’ll be a tough team to beat.
3. Pointers (2-1)
Last week’s ranking: No. 4
Last week’s game: 55-52 win over the Wolfpack
The Pointers were short-handed this past week with Ramon Villanueva, Timmy Adedire and Hassan Tucker all out with injury. 2020 guard Peyton Conn stepped up in a big way by scoring 16 points. 2020 wing Crevonte Adams filled in as the only big the Pointers had and logged 15 points and 10 rebounds. Adams was key in giving them any sort of inside presence and sparking a comeback in the second half to help seal the win.
4. Bluebirds (2-1)
Last week’s ranking: No. 3
Last week’s game: 46-51 loss to EBA
The Bluebirds suffered their first loss on Wednesday, but they refused to go down easily. 2021 Maeson Bracken and 2022 guard Devin Adams both scored 11 points. 2020 Deamony Alves struggled to score as he has in the first two games, but still contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
5. Falcons (1-2)
Last week’s ranking: No. 9
Last week’s win: win over the Mavs
The Falcons looked strong in their first win of summer league. They finally had all of their players and it gave me a chance to see what kind of team they have potential to be. 2021 Malik Scipio has been a consistent standout for the Falcons and this week was no different. The 6-foot-2 guard scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the win. 2023 freshman guard Taylor Hickey showed how dangerous he can be from beyond the arc, scoring 12 of his 13 points from three and finishing with seven rebounds.
6. Bayhawks (1-2)
Last week’s ranking: No. 5
Last week’s game: Loss to the Cobras
As a team, the Bayhawks just couldn’t seem to make a shot in their loss against the Cobras. Rising senior Emanuel Henriques did what he could with 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists, but it wasn’t enough. It’s hard to imagine that the Bayhawks will shoot as bad as they did going forward. When they make half of the shots they missed this past week, they can be a challenge to beat.
7. Mavs (1-2)
Last week’s ranking: No. 6
Last week’s game: loss vs the Falcons
The Mavs came up short despite getting a solid performance out of 2020 forward Fola Solako. The 6-foot-5 forward finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Solako was active around the rim and had a couple of dunks that helped swing momentum towards his team, but the Falcons continued to make shots and the Mavs couldn’t respond.
8. Cobras (1-2)
Last week’s ranking: No. 7
Last week’s game: win over the Bayhawks
The Cobras earned a hard fought win over the Bayhawks last week. The move down in the rankings isn’t a slight to them, it’s just taking into consideration all of the easy looks that didn’t bounce the Bayhawks way. For a period of time, the Cobras were in control of this game, but with a 5-in, 5-out substitution method, it caused them to almost lose this one in the end.
9. Wolfpack (1-2)
Last week’s ranking: No. 8
Last week’s game: loss vs the Pointers
The Wolfpack are improving each week on their chemistry as a team. They have many young players, so it’s expected for this summer to be a bit of a feeling out period. With that being said, they lost to a Pointers team who was missing three of their starters. Late in the game, they started turning the ball over at an alarming rate, which sparked the Pointers to eventually come away with the win. 2021 guard Walter Carr had a nice scoring performance with 15 points to lead his team.
10. Rams (0-3)
Last week’s ranking: No. 10
Last week’s game: loss to the Spartans
Similar to the Wolfpack, the Rams are very much a team taking this time to help grow and develop their young guys. They like to play at a hectic pace, but many teams in this league thrive off of that style. 2021 forward Anthony Forte set the tone down low and did a nice job scoring from the block to lead the Rams with 12 points and a handful of rebounds.
