On the final day there were some new names that stepped up and made a name for themselves, jumping onto our radars.
Jeremiah Coleman — Chaparral
Coleman is a young guard that truly continues to impress the more you see him. He is a quick and wiry point guard that plays with poise. He is able to control the game and make impacting plays on both ends of the floor. Other guards cannot keep up with him and he gets to the rim as easily as any guard in the state. On Sunday’s early game he started off on fire as he went on an early 9-0 run by himself to get his team on the board. He is a tenacious defender that is a pest on the defensive end as well and is a name that I know will sky rocket to one of the best players in the state now by senior year. Get him on your radars and soon.
Bennet Mather— Thunder Ridge
Mather is a guard that can do a bit of everything and that was on display. Against one of the best teams in the event he played with composure and attempted to will his team to victory as they fell by a missed game winner. He took confident shots, rebounded well, ran the team as a guard that plays with tempo which is impressive for a 2022 guy. Mather has a tight handle and makes the right plays on the court which you are looking for in a lead guard and creates for himself and others. The next evolution to his game is scoring in bunches as he has the ability to get to the rim and also knock down shots as well.
Nahsyah Bolar—Northfield
Bolar is a player that really jumped onto my radar as he held his own against Ike Graham, one of the state’s premier big men. Bolar is an athletically gifted big man who who soars for rebounds and kept plays alive with his energy and hustle. He finished around the rim and also showed that he was able to step out as he knocked down a 3-pointer. Bolar was able to work the middle and was stronger than his long frame led me to believe. In the game on Sunday, Bolar easily had over 10 rebounds which is great to see that type of motor and production in such a small-time frame to get going. Bolar should be able to take over in the 5A/4A Denver Prep League and will be a player I surely go see at some point this season.
Nick Ellis-Cy-Fair High School (TX)
Ellis would have got my award for ‘Showcase All-Star’ as he was one of the best hustlers in the gym for the entire weekend. He was very active on the court and his motor made some positive plays happen for himself and his teammates. His strength made him a hard-nosed player that affected the game as he took charges and set hard screens and everything he did was at 100 mph. He grabbed rebounds and went right back up which generated points, he boxed out players and his usage in the pick and roll created gravity for his guards. His energy changed the level of intensity for the day and is a player I thoroughly enjoyed for the duration of the event.
Brett Leach— Andrews High School (TX)
Leach was one of the better scorers on the weekend but what really stood out was his ability as a playmaker. He was a taller guard that attacked the basket and played to his strengths. He moved well and was very unselfish which ended up only giving him easier opportunities to score. He adjusted to each individual matchup and showcased the ability to rebound, pass, shoot and score at will. He made all of the right plays and went on mini runs where he looked like one of the best players on the court.
Micah Lamberth— Classical Academy
Lamberth was a player who really stood out for the entire weekend in the games that I was able to see him. He scored in bunches and was able to use his body for tough finishes as well as showcased an ability to space the floor with an outside jump shot. What I enjoyed about Lamberth was his shooting ability both at mid-range extended jump shots and also his willingness to go inside and bang with the big guys as well.Lamberth is a fluid athlete who isn’t overwhelmingly shifty with the ball in his hands but ran the floor well and is quick off of his feet when he picks up a full head of steam. He was great in transition as he filled the lanes well and made opportunistic plays around the rim for himself and others. His stock definitely boosted in the showcase and is a name to know.
