The 17U squad defeated NY Rens by a final score of 89-70 and the 16U team beat Georgia Stars, 77-75. Below are three takeaways I have after watching both teams play.
17U Team Could Make Final 4 Run
After watching the 17U Boo Williams team dismantle NY Rens, I believe this team has all the pieces to possibly make a run at the final four of Peach Jam. The starting five is as good as any other Peach Jam team and has the capabilities of getting nice production off the bench. Aminu Mohammed looked as good as ever, Mark Williams is a true elite big man in the 2020 class, Zion Harmon runs the show at the lead guard position and Cam Thomas might be the best scorer in grassroots basketball. It might not happen, but I believe there is a strong chance we could see Boo Williams in the final four on Saturday night.
David Jones Is Super Athletic
Before last night I did not know that much about Jones but right away I saw the high major athleticism he has. He was rebounding where he finished with 8 on the night and I would like to say half of those might have been on the offensive glass as he had some impressive offensive tip ins. He can get up high vertically and alter shots and if he keeps that up it could help his recruitment. He still needs a lot of development and improvement on the offensive end as I did not see him take that many jumpers. Most of his 20 points were from transition buckets or layups around the rim. The highlight of his night definitely was when he went full court to hit a tough shot at the buzzer when it was a tie game and his basket was eventually the game winner for Boo Williams.
Aminu Mohammed Shows Out
Two years ago, Aminu Mohammed, led arguably the best high school basketball conference in America, the WCAC, in scoring as a freshman. Now, a rising junior, Mohammed has not slowed down his scoring ability and had one of the top performances I have ever seen from him last night against NY Rens tallying 22 points including 3-3 from deep. He also had 13 rebounds. However, the most impressive part of his performance last night was his ability to visually frustrate maybe the top player in the 2021 class, Jonathan Kuminga. Aminu brought tremendous energy and hustle last night in a big win for Boo Williams. If last night was allowed to be attended by college coaches, I wonder how many new offers Aminu might of had this morning when he woke up.
