Sam Thompson 6’9 Larry Hughes Basketball Academy 16U: The 2021 forward from Francis Howell was a dominant player at both ends in his team’s pool-play victory over 34Hoops. He got things going on the defensive end first with a couple of big blocks in the paint to protect the inside. After that, he was able to get buckets in the post on a variety of moves, plus he stepped out and knocked down some perimeter jumpers. He recently picked up his first Division I offer from Missouri State.
Brennan Lovette 6’4 Knights Basketball Academy 15U: The 2022 wing from DeSmet scored an efficient 12 points in a victory over Arsenal Hoops Select. His size, versatility and skill set enable him to excel just about anywhere on the floor. He handles the ball well and can pass it, plus he can hit 3-pointers and make plays off the dribble for the mid-range jumper. He looks good after missing about of month of summer activity with a wrist injury.
Caleb Thompson 6’1 Arsenal Hoops Elite 15U: A high-energy 2022 wing player from Westminster Christian who scored 15 points and seemed to be everywhere in his team’s opening pool game. He was an active rebounder on both ends and was constantly out his area to get boards, which he converted to putbacks on the offensive end. He got transition layups and he was running from end to end the entire game. His motor never stops, which makes him very productive.
Will Lee 6’1 34Hoops 16U: The 2021 wing from Kirkwood was one of the most impressive athletes that I watched on opening night. He is a prime-time prospect on the football field, and he displayed that toughness and explosiveness on the hardwood last night. He had a couple of resounding breakaway dunks in transitions as well as a few chase-down blocks where he was way over the rim. His game is getting downhill and slashing to the basket, where he was able to finish. He plays hard and his motor runs at full-tilt boogie.
Anthony Lewis 6’1″ and Jackson Neidenbach 6’0″ Arsenal Hoops 16U: A potent 3-point shooting combination that can really stretch the defense with both are hitting at the same time. That was the case last night in the first half that I watched them play last night. Both are excellent catch-and-shoot marksmen with quick releases and a lot of confidence. Each time they touched the ball, the opposing coach was yelling, “Get the Shooter! Get the Shooter!” That’s a helpless feeling where there are two snipers out there. Lewis attends St. Dominic while Neidenbach attends DeSmet.
Casen Lawrence 5’9″ Knights Basketball Academy 15U: A smooth 2022 point guard from Westminster Christian who scored a game-high 12 points in a victory over Arsenal Select in pool play. He is a consummate floor general who knows how to handle an offense and keep his teammates involved with his slick passing skills and court vision. When it is time to looking for his own offense, he is a smooth perimeter shooter with excellent range. He does a good job of playing the game at his own pace.
Donovan Watson 6’1 St Louis Warriors 2023: A bullish young incoming freshman at Hazelwood Central who I was impressed with in their victory over Arsenal Hoops 15U. He has a thick body is made for contact, but he is a skilled ball handler with good fundamentals to go along with that physical strength. He had some impressive takes to the basket in the second half to rally his team to the victory.
