Chaminade-Julienne will not defend their GCL North title
As good as C-J was a year ago, I do not expect the Eagles to win another league title in 2019-20. Their backcourt of Milton Gage and Jack Nauseef did so much for the Eagles on both ends of the floor. Their departure and intensity will be tough to match. Not to mention Joe Staley is no longer coaching as well. Guys like Dan Nauseef (2021) and Larry Turner (2020) will bring plenty of intensity from the frontcourt, but C-J needs a year before they can again finish on top of the GCL North.
Fenwick is still going to be a tough team even with the players graduated
When 4 of your top 5 players from last season are graduated, some people may think you need a season to refuel. At Fenwick however, I predict they will still be a tough team to compete with. It all starts with A.J. Braun (2021) and how opposing defenses go after defending him. A 6 foot 8 power forward, Braun is a tough body to move around and even tougher to deny him in the paint. Take into account his ability to dominate the glass and you may find there are not may teams in Dayton that can completely shut him down.
Don’t count out Carroll with the young players they have
A lot of talent graduated last season for the Patriots, but Tim Cogan still has some young guys that could make some noise in the next 1-2 years. Logan Broaddus (2022) will take over the point guard responsibilities and has shown early in his varsity career that he can both run an offense at the point as well as hang with some of the better guys in Dayton. The talent is not only in the backcourt, but in the post as well. The Patriots have a lengthy big man in Maro Egodotaye (2021) that will have an opportunity to be a future star for the Patriots. He is a little raw on the offensive end, but his length and athleticism on defense makes him a player for the future.
The GCL North will send a team back to the District Finals
Between C-J and Alter a team from the GCL North will make a run to the District Finals. C-J doesn’t have as much firepower as they did a year ago, but they are well coached and play fundamental defense. This could be enough to get through the sectionals. Alter brings back the most experience and between Brady Uhl, Conor Stolly, and Jack Smith they have enough talent to overpower many opponents in the Dayton sectional in Division II. Of the two, I see Alter being the one to advance.
Brady Uhl will be Player of the Year
Uhl is arguably the top senior in the league and guess what, he’s better than he was last year. After coming on the scene a year ago, Uhl has shown more explosiveness and an even better shooting touch this summer. Assuming he brings this intensity to the high school season, he will be unmatched in league play, especially in the backcourt.
