McFarlane shot 6 of 14 and finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds in the Vipers 17s 61-60 victory over NYC New Heights. He also hit for double-digits (11 points) in a loss to Minnesota’s Grassroots Sizzle.
“I think Roger McFarlane is playing out of his mind,” Vipers coach Brandon McThay said. “Playing very tough. We’re asking everything from him. Defend and give us about 20 points a game.”
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard confirmed that he will be back at University School for his senior season after helping the Sharks to an FHSAA Class 5A state championship in March.
McFarlane has scholarship offers from Columbia, New Orleans and Tennessee Tech. He said he is getting interest from Wake Forest, New Mexico, USF, Murray State and Arkansas State.
McFarlane returns for University School along with fellow starters Jace (2020) and Jett (2022) Howard. Taylor Hendricks — a key 6-7/6-8 2022 big — will also be back.
I have been told 2020 national recruit Scottie Barnes re-enrolled at U-School but it remains to be seen where the talented 6-9 point forward will play his senior season. Barnes competed with Nightrydas Elite at the 2019 NIke Peach Jam this week after returning from winning gold with Team USA at the U19 worlds in Greece.
University School lost Duke signee & two-time Florida Mr. Basketball Vernon Carey Jr., speedy guard Zay Flowers, shooting guard Logan Alters and 6-8 reserve Jalil Beaubrun to graduation. 2020 guard David Perez transferred back to Miami Riviera Prep.
Swenson excels in final minute
Stephan Swenson — a 6-1 2020 point guard at defending state champion Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy — made two huge plays in the final minute of the Vipers’ victory over New Heights.
With the Vipers down 60-59, Swenson drew a foul shooting a 3-pointer with 34.2 seconds remaining. He hit two of the three free throws to put the Vipers up for good 61-60. On the ensuing possession, Swenson stole the ball to preserve the win.
“I needed to get that stop,” said Swenson, who finished with 12 points, including two 3-pointers.
Hazelton looking for 1st offer
Team Breakdown 2020 forward Malachi Hazelton is hoping the exposure at UAA brings about his first scholarship offer. Hazelton said he is working this summer to be consistent and get more comfortable with his outside shot. Hazelton transferred to Orlando West Oaks for his final year from Pompano Beach Blanche Ely.
