“Why do you think UNC is offering so many people recently?” – Matt Irving
Roy Williams and his staff dished out three new offers to 2020 prospects on Monday night. Earl Timberlake, Hunter Dickinson and Dawson Garcia all received offers from the ACC program. Scholarship wise it is looking like they have three open spots in that class and they already have potential McDonald’s All American Day’Ron Sharpe verbally committed.
First what jumps out to me with the new offers is I believe the staff felt like they needed to do this because they might not feel like they are in the driver’s seat with anyone else they have offered in that talented 2020 class, so this gives them many more options if say their “Plan A” does not work out.
The second thing that jumps out to me is whoever they land to go with Sharpe in the 2020 class, it is going to be one heck of a class that will be ranked high nationally. All of the guys I feel they have a legitimate shot with are ranked top 30 in the 2020 class so yes at the end of the day, right now it might look like there are a lot of options for the Tar Heels in 2020, but Roy Williams and his staff are going to bring in a lot of talent to Chapel Hill in 2020.
“Which 2021 players make the most sense for Virginia to hone in on for both the player and the school?” – @CommandoRandall
Virginia has offered five prospects in the 2021 class: Carter Whitt, Camren Hayes, Trevor Keels, Max Christie and Efton Reid. Four out of those five guys are really close to Virginia with Max being the outsider from Illinois.
A lot of these guys have already been to Virginia for unofficial visits so the staff has good relationships with most of them. Looking for a lot more noise to start happening with the 2021 prospects later on in July and early fall as Virginia is hoping to wrap up their 2020 class soon.
Another guy that has visited and been seen by the coaches is 2021 Quincy Allen from Maret in DC. He has been offered by half of the ACC already and I expect Virginia to be offering soon.
When you want to talk about good fits for Virginia and the 2021 class, Quincy, Trevor Keels and big man Efton Reid certainly come to mind and would be great fits for both the player and the school.
Like I said, more happenings involving the 2021 class should be occurring soon, but as of now the defending national champions have done great ground work for the 2021 class with some early guys they have offered and established relationships with.
“Do you like RJ Hampton’s move to New Zealand and how do you think it affects NCAA being pushed to pay players? One-done-gone soon?” -@tmarkh757
I am certainly not going to bash a kid for opting to make a decision when it is he and his family’s decision and their decision only. It is going to be interesting to see what happens once RJ goes there and actually start’s playing in games. If he think’s this is the best route for him to prepare for the NBA, then he made the right decision. The money is certainly appealing as it would be for any high schooler his age. Other high school prospects will be watching Hampton closely while he is playing in the land down under to see what type of success he is having as other prospects find the thought process very appealing.
Toward’s the NCAA side of things, I do not think they look at this as something that will “speed up the process” to try and get income into college athletes hands.
The one and done era will most likely be gone at max in at least five years. Everyone I talk to say’s that there is a strong possibility it will be gone in 2022.
