Plus, I have some recruiting information on the players I was able to talk to.
Check out below a handful of Tennessee’s elite thoughts about the BCAT Top 100 Camp:
Jesse Payne, Whitehaven: The 6-foot point guard said “It was nice competing against the top players in Tennessee and making new connections with other people from other parts of Tennessee.”
Payne is receiving interests from Henderson State, Tarleton State, Tougaloo College and Southeastern Louisiana. He averaged 13 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.3 steals per game last season for the Tigers.
Ty Hurst, Knoxville Carter: The 6-3 guard said “I loved it. It was fun to play about elite talent and display my skills to different coaches and scouts. One of my top experiences by far.”
The senior is receiving interests from East Tennessee State, Campbell, Truett McConnell, Freed Hardeman, LMU, Catawba, Montclair State and Queens University. Hurst averaged 17.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.7 steals last season for the Hornets.
Matthew Schneider, Siegal: The 6-4 guard said “I thought it was a great opportunity for the top guys in Tennessee to get to play in front of lots of coaches, and a good platform for it.”
Since June 15th, the junior has been contacted by Missouri Western, Belmont and North Alabama. Liberty is showing interests as well.
Riggs Abner, Mt. Juliet: Abner said “I thought BCAT was well organized. I thought we should’ve went through more skill work at the beginning and not do the last two games, because I don’t think anyone played hard the last two games.
“And also I would’ve liked to hear from college coaches and allow them to talk to everyone as a whole about character and other things they look for.”
The 6-6 wing has been receiving interests from Western Carolina, UT-Martin, Rio Grande, Alabama-Huntsville, Union, Liberty, Trevecca, Florida College, North Arkansas, Missouri Western, West Georgia and UAB.
Abner has been invited to elite camps at ETSU, UT-Martin, West Georgia, Alabama-Huntsville and Trevecca. He will be going to South Alabama’s Elite Camp on August 24th. As a sophomore last season for MT. Juliet, Abner averaged 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals per game.
Matthew Murrell
The Whitehaven High product attended the BCAT Top 100 Camp, but soon will no longer be a product of high school hoops in Tennessee once he heads off to IMG Academy in mid-August. In his junior season, Murrell averaged 21.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 steals per game for the Tigers.
Murrell went on an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt over the weekend and mentioned he enjoyed his time on campus. His former high school basketball coach Faragi Phillips is now one of the assistant coaches under newly head coach Jerry Stackhouse.
I asked what Murrell is hoping to accomplish in his final year of high school at IMG Academy. He said “to get myself ready for the next level.”
Murrell currently has offers from Vanderbilt, Memphis, N.C. State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Appalachian State, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Iowa State, Saint Louis and Texas A&M. Kentucky is showing strong interests in the 6-4 guard.
