College Commitments
Khalid Thomas (2017 West Linn/College of Southern Idaho) to Arizona State. After getting his release from Texas Tech, Thomas didn’t waste any time on his recruitment as he went on back-to-back official visits to Oregon and Arizona State. While the allure of staying close to home with the Ducks was strong, the West Linn graduate and nationally-ranked JC standout ultimately decided that Tempe provided him the best fit for the next two years.
Sam Scarpelli (2017 Reynolds/Clark CC) to Concordia (Neb.) – A 2017 Reynolds graduate, Scarpelli went to Clark and averaged 11.5 points this past year as a sophomore, leading the NWAC in free throw percentage at a sizzling 95.3 percent. The 5-foot-9 guard will continue his college career at NAIA program Concordia, located in Seward, Nebraska, not far from Lincoln.
Ruben Onishchenko (2019 Putnam) to Clackamas CC – The 6-foot-3 wing helped lead the Kingsmen to the playoffs and earned Forst Team All-Northwest Oregon Conference honors, yet remained largely underneath the recruiting radar. Clackamas noticed though and signed Onishchenko to keep him close to home.
Transfers
Nolan Bertain (2017 West Linn/Casper JC/UAB) to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – After a sophomore season with limited playing time, Bertain decided to move on and enter the transfer portal. At first it appeared he might come back home to join Portland State, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi offered a scholarship and the 6-foot-4 wing jumped on it. The West Linn grad will have two years of eligibility remaining after he sits out the 2019-2020 season.
Markus Golder (2015 Clackamas/North Idaho/Valparaiso) to Portland State – It’s been a long road since Golder graduated from Clackamas in 2015, but the 6-foot-6 wing is finally back home. It was first two years at North Idaho (one as a redshirt) and then the past two at Valparaiso, where he averaged over 9 points a game both seasons. But given the option to transfer having graduated, Golder will get to play immediately for the Vikings where he will no doubt make an immediate impact.
Jordan May (2017 Reynolds/Eastern Oregon) to Point Loma Nazarene – May flewunder the radar after his high school career at Reynolds and went to Eastern Oregon as a late signee. There in La Grande, the 6-foot-3 guard blossomed as a scorer, averaging 20 points per game. He got in touch with Point Loma Nazarene after a coaching change there and now May will be heading to San Diego to continue his college career. May will have two years of eligibility remaining for the Sea Lions.
Scholarship Offer
Ben Gregg (2021 Clackamas) – It’s been a little while since the rising junior got some recruiting love but Gregg picked up an offer from USC this past week. He and his family had made an unofficial visit to campus back in late March.
Other Tidbits
As school ball gets started again this June, we will see a number of new faces at new programs (i.e. transfers). One of the ones that stands to make the most impact on the 2019-20 season is Micah Garrett, who will now be at Jefferson. With the addition of him and rising junior Keyshawn Hall, there’s no doubt that the Demos already look like the team to beat… Lake Oswego added a transfer of their own as rising senior Jack Chlumak has joined the Lakers from Newberg. His arrival of the 6-foot-3 combo guard will help Lake Oswego immensely, especially as they await the future of rising junior Wayne McKinney, whose family may be moving to Southern California… Now that the spring AAU season is over, some unsigned seniors will be looking at making some decisions on their college future… Cobi Wilson (2019 Aloha) noted that he’s set to take a visit to Merritt JC in California soon… Juwon Esuk (2019 Westview) has a walk-on opportunity at SW Oregon CC and a prep school in Maryland is interested… Fred Harding (2019 Lake Oswego) will be going the JC route at an NWAC school; the only question is which one. Chemeketa, Clackamas, Lane, and Linn-Benton are just some of the schools that are under consideration.
