I was able to attend the event all day on June 12 and I saw some top talent. There’s no substitute for being a flat out scorer who can get buckets and there were quite a few of them on display. Here’s a look at some of the top scorers I saw that day.
1. Tyler Powell – Ribet Academy 2021
Last season, Powell transferred to Ribet from St. Bernard and helped them win a state title. He’s a very versatile scorer. He’s actually making the switch from playing in the post as a big to being able to handle the ball and make plays on the perimeter as a guard. He’s comfortable with the ball in his hands and making plays off the dribble to get to the rim. He can also shoot with confidence from the perimeter.
2. Snookey Wigington – Ribet Academy 2020
Another top scorer for Ribet Academy. Wigington is an incoming senior who can do a little bit of everything on the court. He’s a good playmaker with good court vision who can set his teammates up for easy baskets. But he’s a deadly scorer when he wants to be. He’s quick off the dribble and can easily beat his defender to the rim where he finishes with ease. He also creates his own shot on the perimeter and is consistent from three-point range.
3. Jordan Shelly – Providence 2020
This incoming senior is very crafty scorer. He has the ability to play both guard positions and can be a facilitator who can create for his teammates, but he can also balance that out with looking to get his own shot when necessary. He has a nice jump shot from the midrange, and he steps out and can shoot from distance. He’s also able to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. Can draw contact and get to the free-throw line.
4. Ben Shtolzberg – Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2022
A true shooting guard in every sense, as an incoming sophomore, his best basketball is ahead of him. He can’t be left alone on the three-point line as he’s too good of a shooter. That enables him to take advantage of the defense and get closer to the rim. He has a great midrange game and utilizes screens well to free himself up. He can also beat his defender off the dribble and finish at the rim.
5. Kyjuan Cannady – Santa Clarita Christian 2020
A great athlete who uses that to his advantage when it comes to scoring the basketball. He’s great in transition running the break well and filling the lanes properly to catch passes from his teammates and finish the play. He can also handle the ball in transition and go coast to coast. Whenever he’s around the rim, he’s looking to finish the play with authority. He’s a got a decent perimeter jump shot as well.
