And Coach Gary McKnight’s crew showed why that’s the case Saturday evening while cruising past Brentwood, 83-61, in the championship game of the 33rd Fairfax Summer Tournament.
The Monarchs got a game-high 23 points (including five 3s) from 6-foot-9, junior-to-be Harrison Hornery while 6-4 senior-to-be guard Aidan Prukop (PICTURED) added 20.
Devin Askew and Nick Davidson – who will also be juniors when the fall semester begins at Mater Dei in August – scored 13 points apiece while member of the Class of 2021, Wilhelm Breidenbach, added 11.
Brayden Thomas and Christian Moore scored 12 points apiece Brentwood.
The Monarchs were short-handed much of the 16-team event, including Saturday night:
*Breidenbach and Askew played in the Nike Elite 100 Camp in St. Louis during the week, with Askew playing in his team’s final two Fairfax games and Breidenbach rejoining the squad Saturday.
*Senior guard Ryan Evans – one of the West’s best jump shooters – is sidelined because of a sever left-ankle injury that he suffered in the Section 7 Team Tournament in Phoenix on June 23.
*And key subs Logan Cremonesi and Casey Jones were not in the gym because they were playing with a Mater Dei “split squad” during a tournament in Newport Beach.
In the other games played Saturday:
*Third: Rolling Hills Prep 65, Fairfax 60;
*Fifth: St. Francis 84, Lynwood 54;
*Seventh-place: Beverly Hills 99, Alemany 75;
*Consolation: L.A. University 74, L.B. Poly 66;
*11th: Dorsey 55, Maranatha 33;
*13th: Loyola 66, La Canada 55;
*15th: Washington Prep 53, Santa Monica 48.
