Scorer: Dontrell Johnson LV Timberwolves – Honestly this was an easy one. Johnson never started a game this weekend, yet he was his teams leading scorer. If we kept track of plus minus, he probably would have lead the tournament. He scored in a variety of ways, including in transition, off offensive rebounds, post ups, and isolation situations. Instant offense off the bench, and you don’t need to run plays for him to get buckets.
Rebounder: Kaden Koening Jam On It– Koenig gets this because of his ability to rebound outside of his area. Not the most athletic guy the 6”3 Koenig uses technique and determination to carve out space. He competes for every miss, and is stronger on the offensive than defensive boards.
Defender:Jackson Williams Team Rogue 2021– Until I studied Williams I was not sure who was eligible for this award. If I was giving out a courage award he would have won that as well. He was a one man full court press, which is amazing enough. However, when you consider that his Team Rogue team only had 5 guys all weekend, his efforts become even more amazing. I don’t know if he has the offensive package to be a scholarship athlete, but he has the length, foot speed and athletic ability to be the best defender in the state.
Passer: Joeseph Summers – Joey dimes dished out assist all weekend. His arsenal includes no look passes as well as textbook ones. He understands when he needs to make a bounce vs a chest pass, and you couldn’t hand the ball better to the guy on some of his passes. Had his teammates been able to catch and finish more, he would have easily lead the tournament in assist.
Shooter: Nicholas Attansio – I don’t remember him ever missing, I’m sure he did but I don’t remember it. Quick release, and beautiful form on his shot. He is a floor spacer and you have to have a body on him at all times.
Best Team: Team Rogue – I have already made plans to check out Faith Lutheran this year. One of the most disciplined team I have seen all summer. They run some awesome sets, all predicated off of early pin down action. Their defensive game plan is great, with Williams on the ball cutting off the head and the other 4 defenders building a wall against penetration.
Program to Watch: Team Swoosh – They will be playing in the Prephoops.com Hustle Region event taking place next month in Irvine. I need to see more of this team, Coach Ric has 10 guys all of similar size and build, but they all can play. If he can find a little more outside shooting, then I believe this is a program on the rise.
Best Game: LV Timberwolves vs Team Swoosh – If we covered 5th graders I would tell you about a game that probably had more top 100 11 year olds than only game in the country. As for the High School guys it was clearly the Timberwolves vs Swoosh. Game was played at a breakneck speed. Swoosh jumped out to a big lead, but lead by Johnson the Timberwolves fought back for an impressive 67 – 59 win.
Gold Division MVP: Jason Sims – This probably should go to the entire team, but I thought Sims kind of epitomized what Team Rogue was as a whole. He was super unselfish and was a star in his role. The difference maker was, the fact that he created more for himself and his teammates than anyone else.
Silver Division MVP: Dontrell Johnson – I’m going to be following Johnson closely as he is certainly a player to watch in the class of 2022.
