Marquette: The Mustangs are without their all-state performer in Jason Montgomery, who will be entering his freshman year at Drury. They will be paced by 5’11” 2020 point guard Ilyaas “Biscuit” Harris and 6’6″ 2021 wing Devon Barshow. Harris is a talented point guard who can facilitate the offense and create his own buckets as well. Barshow is a big, slender perimeter talent who should emerge into a much bigger role this year after coming on strong late in the season. 6’5″ 2020 forward Josh Merz was strong around the basket with his scoring and rebounding and 6’2″ 2020 wing Jeremiah Jennings is a high-energy player.
Helias: The Crusaders looked very solid over the weekend despite being without top returning player Marcus Anthony, a 6’2″ guard who is still recovering from a season-ending injury. He could be back later this summer. I was impressed with 6’4″ 2020 forward Caleb Justice, who played with a high motor and has some nice skills go along with it. He scored in the post and was very good on the drive. 5’8″ 2020 guard Isaac Johnson is a veteran who can really shoot it from the perimeter. Another excellent shooter for Helias is 6’4″ 2020 guard Colby Lecuru, who was really hitting from long distance.
Monroe City: The Panthers have to replace a tremendous player in guard CE Talton, who led Monroe City to three consecutive Class 3 district championships. The most experienced player is 6’2″ 2020 guard Bryce Stark, a strong-bodied wing player who can get buckets on the perimeter of play well in the high post. 2020 point guard Antwan Battle is back to run the show while 6’3″ 2021 forward Logan Buhlig can also shoot it from distance. The Talton family has more talent in the program in 6’1″ 2022 twins Joshua and Josiah Talton. Joshua Talton played well as a freshman starter. He is a talented offensive player.
Webster Groves: It will be a new look all the way around for the Statesmen, as they graduated an entire talented nucleus from last year’s successful season, plus the retirement of Hall of Fame head coach Jay Blossom. There are many new faces at Webster Groves, but two who stood out are 5’8″ 2022 guard Matt Enright and 5’10” 2021 guard Anthony Phieffer. Enright is small, but he is savvy and he can knock down shots from deep. Phieffer is quick and very aggressive at both ends of the court.
