The Lynx played three scrimmages on Monday at Briarcrest High School, and the starting five of Jalen Bo Montgomery, Dylan Woods, Dylan Andrews, Nick Floyd and Johnathan DeJurnett looked the part of a team that’s preparing to have a special season.
Davis will have the luxury this season of coaching veterans, players who have been around the block more than once. In order for Lausanne to redeem itself from last year’s 17-11 campaign – that ended with a second round loss to Tipton-Rosemark Academy in the Division II-A West Region Tournament – the starting five of Montgomery, Woods, Andrews, Floyd and DeJurnett will have to lead the way.
“All five starters played a ton for us last year,” Davis said. “Johnathan has really stepped up big time. Bo has really stepped up big time. Nick is knocking down shots. We have to get him in a little more in basketball shape. He’s a little tired out there. That happens when you’re playing two sports, and he’s a football guy, too.
“But, I’m telling you, I really like where we’re at, and I like the way they’re playing for sure.”
The Lynx’ starting five provided a glimpse against MUS of what they can possibly do next season if healthy. DeJurnett, a power forward who protects the rim, had 19 points in his team’s win. Montgomery added 15 points and eight assists. Woods pitched in 14, while Floyd and Andrews finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
Because of the departures from point guard Hayden Ledbetter – who is rumored to be heading to Arlington High School to play under former Raleigh Egypt High School boys’ basketball coach Maurice Miller – and combo guard Alden Applewhite – who is rumored to be heading to Houston High School – Davis is getting a perfect painted picture on what the rotations will look like throughout next season.
Defensively, Lausanne will be long. Montgomery and Woods are 6-5. DeJurnett is standing at 6-8, while Andrew is 6-foot.
“Not only that, but all of them are super athletic,” Davis said. “I mean, Dylan Andrews can dunk and play above the rim. Of course, we know what Johnathan can do above the rim. Bo is probably the most athletic kid in the state behind Matthew Murrell. Dylan is the same way. He can play above the rim.
“So our length and athleticism are going to really help us. We’re working on some things timely wise. We only had one practice, and we played three games. We’re 2-1 right now. Right now, we’re playing around with our rotations. We’re rotating five guys in and five guys out, playing a lot of young guys.
“So for us to be 2-1 in summer league right now and losing to a good BTW (Booker T. Washington) team by four points, I like where we are at.”
