In a hot gym, the Wildcats sprinted out to an early lead and never really faltered, defeating the Crusaders 50-41.
A number of players did not suit up for Jesuit as Liam Ruttledge and Dupre Gaston did not play and Matthew Levis left the game in the first half with an ankle injury. For Westview, Mason Guerra remains unavailable as the Oregon State baseball commit is busy with summer baseball.
Here are the top performers from the game:
Brady Grier (2021 Westview) – Grier was the top performer on the day. The 6-foot-4 wing is known for his perimeter shooting and he knocked down a couple of jumpers but he was also strong taking the ball to the basket, either converting or drawing fouls. Grier also helped out on the boards and found a couple of his teammates for open shots for a couple of assists.
Jalen Grable (2021 Westview) – Grable wasn’t particularly aggressive offensively on Tuesday night, instead focusing on hitting the boards – something in which we feel he may end up one of the state’s leading rebounders next season. The 6-foot-4 wing/forward used his length and athleticism to snare boards on both ends, with a couple of the offensive rebounds leading to easy putbacks.
London Smalley (2020 Westview) – Smalley started off the game like a house on fire, draining a couple of jumpers and really getting into it on defense. The 6-foot-0 athlete will be the team’s main point guard this year and he showed a good handle, but could have made some better decisions in the game getting his teammates involved. Smalley used his athleticism to help out on the boards and push the ball up the floor.
Connor Kollas (2020 Jesuit) – This was the first time we’d seen Kollas this summer as his focus had been on Jesuit’s championship baseball run. The 6-foot-3 wing ended up being the Crusaders high scorer with eight points, with six of those coming off of kick-out threes – something Kollas is known for. But he also put the ball on the floor a little to attack and he was solid on the defensive boards.
Roy Bunn (2021 Jesuit) – Bunn manned the point when he was in the game and largely looked to pass rather than get his own offense, as the only points he scored were in transition. The 5-foot-9 guard was successful with driving and kicking it out, although they didn’t lead to many assists as Jesuit was fairly cold from the outside.
