On Monday night we got a chance to take a look at some of these up-and-coming players, some of which may find themselves getting some varsity minutes next year as the Jeff Gold and Roosevelt Black squads faced off at Jefferson High School.
Here are the top young players we noticed.
Emanuel Washington (2020 Jefferson) – Athletic 5-foot-10 combo guard. Works hard on both ends, can create off the bounce and spot up and knock down open threes. Coaching staff compares him positively to Charlez Douglas, last year’s tenth man.
Allyion Ford (2020 Jefferson) – Lefty 5-foot-10 combo guard with a solid frame. Can handle the ball a little and hit the occasional jump shot. The key will be playing within himself and not trying to do too much. Will likely be a deep reserve on the varsity squad.
Sanborne Melson (2023 Jefferson) – Tough, 5-foot-11, combo guard that is physically mature for his age. Takes it to the basket strong and finishes and can hit the perimeter jumper. Younger brother of former Demo standout Silas Melson.
Dontae Myrick (2021 Jefferson) – Big bodied developing big man at 6-foot-5. Mobile and runs the court well. Will battle on the boards on both ends. Raw offensively, but has a decent touch and a go-to half-hook to shoot over opponents. Could be valuable as a practice player against Jefferson’s varsity big guys.
Amari Adams (2023 Jefferson) – Young combo guard that probably stands at 5-foot-9 but is still growing. Has a nice touch from the outside, knocked down three threes in the game.
Nywaun Campbell (2023 Roosevelt) – Athletic wing who has a bounce in his step. Has the ability to attack the basket but seems to like shooting from the perimeter, where he has range past the three-point line. Active defensively.
Ed Dixon (2023 Roosevelt) – Developing big man who already stands 6-foot-5. Lefty. Big wide body who takes up a lot of space in the paint but will need to work on conditioning. Has a pretty nice touch around the hoop and will battle for boards.
TJ Latu (2024 Roosevelt) – Young point guard who already is showing a good feel for the game. Lefty. Prefers to drive and utilize a little flip-shot floater. Has decent form on his perimeter shot.
