Here is a look at Saturday’s standouts in the first of the two-day event.
Devion Harris 6’7″ Parkway Central: The talented 2020 forward was probably the best overall player that I watched on Saturday. He entered high school as a raw freshman who could block shots, but he has developed his entire game over the course of his career. He could always score in the post, but he can handle the ball, score on the bounce and knock down perimeter jumpers. You can tell he has put in a lot of work on his game and the results are evident.
Lyndell Hunt 6’4″ Confluence Prep Academy: The most athletic player that I watched on Saturday, the 2020 forward is an explosive performer who will dunk at a moment’s notice. He dunked on transition rim-runs, offensive put backs and even a couple of daring drives to the bucket in the half court offense. He complimented that athleticism with some nice perimeter jumpers off the dribble.
Zivaughn Ward 5’9″ Battle: The small 2020 point guard shares the ball-handling duties with Division I teammate Maricus Grant, but he manages to shine just as well with his speed and quickness. He plays at a fast tempo, but he is always able to make good decisions with the ball on the fly. He is a tough defender with the ability to penetrate in the lane and create for open teammates.
Schyler Pimentel 6’2″ Riverview Gardens: The 2020 shooting guard is a pure bucket-getter who knows to score in a variety of ways. He was very good at creating his own offense with his handles and ability to score in the lane in dense traffic. He can pull up and knock down jumpers or penetrate and make floaters and twisting layups against good defense.
Brandon Mitchell-Day 6’5″ MICDS: A long and athletic 2022 guard who did a little bit of everything on Saturday. He plays point guard for his team, where he has a high basketball IQ and the ability to make his teams better. He can rebound and take the ball coast to coast for the layup. Defensively, his length is a problem, whether he’s in the passing lanes of blocking shots from the back side.
Justin Williams 6’2″ Francis Howell: A 2020 guard who didn’t see much action on a loaded Howell team in 2019, he was a revelation on Saturday with his high energy play at both ends of the court. The young man was getting to the rim and scoring on slashing drives to the basket and in transition. His intensity level was high in the game that I watched him.
Devan Edwards 6’2″ Fort Zumwalt North: A transfer from Miller Career Academy, this slashing 2020 guard will be a welcome addition to the Panthers with his ability to score. He is a solid ball handler who got buckets with his ability to score on layups and creative finger rolls. When his game is rolling, he will also rise up and confidently knock down a 3-pointer.
Jaylon Ashford 6’2′ Wentzville Holt: The 2020 shooting guard is an impressive lefty bucket-getter with a lot of versatility in his game. He has a smooth lefty stroke, which he displayed several times with walk up 3-pointers that were butter. He also has an effective middle game and he can also post up and score in the lane to take advantage of his size and length.
