Catching up with Shelby’s newest coach a bit, I asked Nathon Loney a few questions.
Interview:
1. How has the move to Shelby been?
• An eye opening experience. Going from 15 kids on the team to having 40 kids now has been a big change. Shelby is a great supportive community, I’ve met more people the past month of being at Shelby than i did the 2 years at ridgedale. Everyone has been very welcoming and the administration at Shelby have been great to me.
2. What are you excited most for ?
• I am most excited to see how my kids continue to develop and improve with my coaching system. From what I’ve been told what I am teaching is completely different from in the past.
3. What system / concepts are you looking forward to?
• Playing fast. I’m big on scoring out of transition offense. Right now I am planning on rotating 8-9 possible 10 kids. Defensively we will get after it and play a lot of full court man.
4. What was it like leaving Ridgedale?
• It was tough. I had a very close personal bond with each of the kids and was very close with some of my kids there and still talk to some of them on a daily basis. The administrative staff at ridgedale were awesome to work with and they hated to see me leave but were also very understanding and supportive of my decision.
5. Coaching career info?
• 7th grade coach at Danville, 8th grade coach at Danville, freshman coach at Danville, JV coach at Danville, and head varsity assistant coach at Danville. As an 8th grade and freshman coach at Danville played for a league championship both years. Was head varsity assistant for Danville when they lost in the regional finals to Fairfield Christian. Was JV coach at west Muskingum for 2 years. Took a year off and was a personal skills trainer for multiple college basketball players. Head varsity basketball coach at ridgedale for 2 years.
6. Playing career info?
• Four year varsity basketball player at Danville high school, went to tiffin university on a half ride scholarship to play basketball but had a knee injury prior to season starting.
7. How have you guys done the month of June? Results?
• We had our first shootout June 11 at Ontario where we went 5-0 and had a shootout at Norwalk on June 13 where we went 3-1. Kids are showing a lot of great signs and picking up great habits of what we want them to do. Doing a good job at playing the fast pace game that we want them to play. We are a little out of shape right now but with my strength and conditioning background we will be faster, stronger and better conditioned than Shelby has been in previous years.
