They recently remade the back gym and added a brand new weight room, which looked like a college campus. It was impressive to say the least. All the bracket finals ended up there on Sunday.
Multiple AZ players received D1 offers and heavy interest this weekend showing the West Coast how much more talent there is then possibly ever before in the state.
Here were some sophomores and 1 freshman who shined when I viewed their teams:
2022
Adrame Diongu PF 6’10 180 Chaparral
-At somewhere between 6’9 and 6’11 he dunks the ball easily and gets off the floor effortlessly. Passes well out of double teams and moves like a wing. Understands how to seal his man already despite being a little thin. Spins quickly in the post and goes to work to score it. He is almost all right hand currently but gets high for rebounds with two hands. Reaches at times on defense and has some lapses of awareness but his upside is through the roof.
Elijah Saunders F 6’6 205 Sunnyslope
-Face-up forward is very skilled from elbow and in. Great build/frame and good strength. Has range from the 3pt line and in and is very physical inside to bang with the post players. Handles the ball decently and can throw it down with some momentum.
Mekhi Mason PG 6’2 165 Chandler
-One of the my favorite long term PG’s in the class from AZ. He is only 14 years old and has great length and a tight handle. Shoots the ball well and loves the 1-2 dribble pull-up off the dribble. Uses length and quicks to defend and handles pressure smartly by changes speeds, blowing by or finding open teammates. Looks like he will push out 2-3 more inches with his baby face.
Oakland Fort PG 5’8 155 Sunnyslope
-Quick pure PG can score it, Undersized but has serious jets and nice court vision to make plays for others. Nice pull-up off the dribble. Good pace to his game and understands how to change speeds and control a game with his burst and handle at a young age.
2023
Roosevelt “Tru” Washington SF 6’3 170 Chavez
-Long incoming freshman is a talent. He is very athletic, has good size and plays really hard. He rebounds the ball well and flies in the open court. His activity is apparent on defense where he defends multiple positions inside and out. The long lefty likes getting downhill but he can already hit the 3pt shot, make passes to teammates and has no fear starting on varsity like he’s an old vet. He will make his freshman mistakes at times, but the uncle of Ty Ty Washington Jr. looks to be one of the best if not the best freshman in the class.
