They recently remade the back gym and added a brand new weight room, which looked like a college campus. It was impressive to say the least. All the bracket finals ended up there on Sunday.
Multiple AZ players received D1 offers and heavy interest this weekend showing the West Coast how much more talent there is then possibly ever before in the state.
Here were some juniors who shined when I viewed their teams:
DaRon Holmes PF 6’8 185 Millennium
-Another impressive outing for the rising junior forward. Keeps evolving his shooting and he is becoming more efficient with it. His 3-ball looks better as well as his pull-up off the dribble from mid-range. His best part of his game is becoming his all around defense. He defends multiple positions inside and out. He tracks the ball well with great timing and instincts to block shots at a good rate. He flies up the court end to end just as fast as any forward out there. Once he gets stronger, he will be even harder to defend.
Ty Ty Washington CG 6’4 180 Cesar Chavez
-Polished scorer from all 3 levels. He has nice shooting stroke from the 3pt line with deep range and a quick release. The game is so easy for him and his feel to just make plays is super high. Call him a 1 or 2, it doesn’t really matter since he has great size, one of the strongest players in the class, makes everyone on his team better, tough, skilled and just a winner. Chavez will be in state contention all year long behind him in 6A.
Carson Basham C 6’10 225 Sunnyslope
-Highly skilled big who keeps ascending. He has become one of the better passing bigs in his class. He has big hands to rebound the ball and keeps it high. He can face-up from mid-range and is crafty in the post making tough layups around the hoop. Slope will be a state contender in 5A behind the their twin towers of Basham and Lewis.
Isaiah Broady SF 6’6 170 Chandler
-Long wing with a nice looking jumper. He has deep range with a quick trigger. He can also put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. He rebounds well with his length and height and has good athleticism. He uses his massive wingspan to defend in the passing lanes. He needs to get stronger but according to his coach, Isaiah asked him to lift in the month of July to bulk up, showing that he’s ready to put in the work to get better. During the game an opposing player went down and he helped carry him off towards the bench showing his high character. (Pictured)
Grady Lewis PF/C 6’7 210 Sunnyslope
-Great body and efficient scorer in the post. Has a nice jump hook shot using his dominant right hand. Rebounds well in his area and can score with his left but prefers his right currently. He blocks shots in his area and uses his strength and length to do many of his tasks. He runs the court well and has a good motor.
Nick Riley C 6’8 230 Chandler
-Huge 5-man is slowly turning the corner. His hands are improving and his motor has perked up. He rebounds like a mad man using his girth, big hands, height and length. He also is blocking shots at a higher rate as well. He runs the floor better and if he can get a little more spring to his bounce, he will take off.
Ricardo Sarmiento PG 5’11 160 Cesar Chavez
-Stud on-ball defender has a polished pull-up. He is great off the catch from the 3pt line and he pulls up high from mid-range. He is a smart play-maker and plays hard throughout the game. He is the fiery team leader with Washington.
Tampa Scott PG 5’10 145 Gilbert
-Jet quick pure PG with an improved jumper. He is undersized but a ball hawk on defense with great speed. He has a good burst into the lane where he uses the floater well. Can hit the deep 3 plus pull-up from mid-range. He is a tough competitor and he will lead the Tigers in the 20-21 season.
Carson Kelly PG 5’8 130 Chandler
-One of the better pure PG’s in the class. He gets the game from the neck up and has some speed with the ball in his hands. Has a nice burst to blow by his defender and finish. He has a nasty pull-up from mid-range and can hit the deep ball. His court vision makes his game along with his tight handle. Undersized but tough, smart, fast and skilled.
Malik Mack PG 6’0 155 Desert Vista
-Fast lead guard may be the top on-ball defender in the class. He has elite lateral quickness and quick hands and feet. He is almost an all downhill scorer and needs to work on his perimeter shooting but will set the table and defend his position.
