The ABCA really hit a home run with this event and are trying to do more to bring exposure to players. While there were many games and I cover both boys and girls, I was only able to go to so many games, so if your favorite player isn’t on my lists, it is probably because I didn’t watch that team. Check out our site all week for Section 7 coverage from all of our staff. Here are my Section 7 Top Guards!
Devin Askew 6’3 2021 G (Mater Dei)
Devin Askew is better than advertised. During his game with Millennium, he looked to be playing at half speed. He still dropped 12 assists and had 1 turnover. That is an elite assist to turnover ratio. He just seems to be a step ahead of the defense and excels at reading what your team is trying to do on defense. Great passer all around and scored when he needed to. Very good pure point guard.
Justus Jackson 6’0 2021 G (Millennium)
Justus did some good things this weekend that earned him another offer from North Carolina A&T. He showed off how much more athletic and bouncy he has gotten, throwing down a couple big time dunks. He even went toe to toe with Devin Askew. While his team lost that game, I think that proved to a lot of people that he can hang with those top tier guards, even when his size puts him at a noticeable disadvantage.
Ty Ty Washington 6’3 2021 G (Cesar Chavez)
Ty Ty Washington did Ty Ty Washington things this weekend. Washington excels at scoring the ball and there’s no clear cut way to stop him. Scoring is what Washington does best and every team needs a go to scorer. He played well and earned himself another offer from Grand Canyon University.
Evan Nelson 6’2 2020 G (Salpointe)
The era of Evan Nelson has begun and he is on fire. Nelson continues his dominance from last weekends local tournament into Section 7. He is a high scoring guard and his stellar play earned him another offer from Cal Poly.
KJ Simpson 6’2 2021 G (Chaminade)
This kid was ridiculously athletic! 6’2 and he was throwing down put back dunks left and right. He had the whole crowd going bananas. He must have had 5-8 dunks in the game and man he gets up! He is super quick and gets in the lane with ease and then can quickly rise up with the best of them.
Dominic Harris 6’4 2020 G (Rancho Christian)
Harris is always a joy to watch, he is what I think of when I think of what a D1 guard looks like. He is long, athletic, has a great IQ, and solid motor. He is super crafty around the rim and can knock down the 3 if you give him an inch of breathing room.
Dominic Gonzalez 6’3 2020 G (Ironwood)
Gonzalez made a big impression on people with his multiple scoring outbursts. This is the best I’ve seen Gonzalez play and he did it in front of the perfect crowd and venue. Gonzalez is without a D1 offer and if there’s ever a chance that he finally receives one, it has to be after this event.
