Frank Jakubicek (Cary Grove – 2020)
In the morning matchup against St. Laurence Frank was terrific. He controlled the entire game with his footwork and ability to score through contact. It didn’t matter where the defense came from Jakubicek took his time and always made the right play. It didn’t stop there for Frank. He was able to make plays from 15 feet with a nice catch and drive for a big two handed slam and capped it off with a pair of three pointers from the corner. Jakubicek led everyone (28 points) in scoring with a dominating performance over the Vikings of St. Laurence
Louis Lesmond (Niles Notre Dame – 2021)
Louis name has been buzzing in the gym all weekend. In the morning matchup with Bolingbrook he kept the buzz going showing off his athleticism and ability to create off the dribble. Lesmond was able to score on all 3 levels in this game usually drawing a defender that was smaller than him. He would attack the rim and rise over the defender for easy baskets. When the paint was clogged he played off the ball and did a good job showing his range. He definitely had a break out weekend.
Isaiah Barnes (Oak Park River Forest – 2021)
Barnes maybe played the best I’ve ever seen him Sunday morning. Once the game picked up Barnes turned it on. He started with some really strong drives to the rim where he weaved through defenders with a quick dribble then made a euro step and a nice under handed layup. Then when that wasn’t an option he made some nice plays off a ball screen to free himself up for jumpers that never touched the rim. He finished with 22 points during the game. And his team came back and won.
Tyler Beard (Whitney Young – 2020)
A motivated Beard was electric in the afternoon matchup against Hillcrest. This matchup was filled with trash talk and players getting in each other’s face. Tyler used this to his advantage as he played with a chip on his shoulder pushing the ball with the intention go through any one that stood in his way. His knack to get low on his dribble then rise up and make acrobatic plays around and over defenders played out most of the game as most of the Hillcrest guards were smaller than him. Tyler capped everything off with a thunderous dunk that had the crowd and most coaches looking at each other like wow “Did he just do that?” Beard finished with 20 points and the win.
Darius Burford (Bolingbrook – 2020)
Burford did the best he could to try and get the win over Niles Notre Dame. He is a speedy guard that is explosive around the rim when dribbling in transition. Darius was in a battle with opposing guard Anthony Sayles. In which he gave him all that he could handle. Burford showed that despite his size he can power up take contact and finish layups around the rim. He made a really nice move while off the ball where a teammate made a pass to him in the corner, he went baseline, jumped up, went around the defender, and scored on the other side of the rim. His motor and tenacity kept his team in the game. But Notre Dame just had too many weapons and defeated Bolingbrook. Darius finished with 21 points in the loss.
