Continue ReadingAlexandria big Treyton Thompson is ranked in the national top 150 of the 2021 class and we caught up with Treyton this week to talk Howard Pulley, Alexandria, the summer, and some recruiting.
On Wednesday we saw Treyton score 24 points on 9 of 14 field goals with 11 boards and 8 blocks versus St. Francis. That was followed by 12 points and 11 rebounds against Delano (keep in mind these are running time games). Thompson blocked shots with great timing and of course has the type of size that resulted in players just giving up when it comes to attempting shots when Thompson was in the area.
Treyton is a constant when it comes to working on his game. The massive improvements we saw from spring of 2018 to fall of 2018 have only taken bigger step forwards through the winter and spring.
“Everybody kept telling me that I could be a really good player as I had such good potential so I kept working every day,” Thompson said of his growth. “The guys from Team Get Shook continued to work with me every day. They made me dunk the ball every single time and it made me grow into what I am today.
“My plan is to continue to get in the gym once or twice a day, work on my ball handling and my shot, and work on finishing through contact and things like that. I usually work with parents, sometimes my parents, and my teammate Colton Roderick who is always in the gym with me.”
Thompson is competing with the Howard Pulley 16 and Under team that is 3-4 in two EYBL events with wins over Phenom U, Expressions Elite, and Mebo Express. The Panthers are 16-6 overall this year with a couple wins over KC Run GMC and a victory over the OSA Crusaders also on their resume.
“It’s such a good experience, you are going against the top people in the country,” Thompson said. “It’s a whole different level of basketball that makes you better because the game is so fast paced. I just love it.
“We play together. Everybody is one the same page and everybody likes playing together. Nobody complains, everybody just plays basketball.”
This winter as a sophomore Thompson averaged 17 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks a game for the Cardinals. Alexandria was 19-9 on the season and they were competing with a young line-up that projects to be even better in 2019-20.
“I played in the post a lot and I got a lot more physical,” Treyton explained. “I learned how to finish through contact using a couple different moves in the post. I pushed the ball once in awhile so that helped. My team, we had a really young team and we have a lot of players coming back so we are ready to go, fired up for the next season.
“We lost three seniors and two of them played a really big role during the game plus a guy who was a scrapper who was really good. Our point guard Trey Hoepner is a big loss but we are coming back really excited to play.”
Thompson’s first scholarship offer came from the current staff of Texas Tech, the staff that of course just led their team to the national championship game. Treyton continues to hear from the Red Raiders and others.
“I hear most commonly from Minnesota, Purdue, Northern Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas Tech talks to me every day,” Thompson. “I haven’t scheduled any visits at all because right now I am more focused on AAU basketball. There are a lot of people talking to me but at the moment I’m trying to lay low and continue on improving, continue to work to improve. The recruiting will come naturally. My coaches talk to college coaches every day.”
