Six-foot-4, 185 pound Carrington senior Seth Nelson led the Cardinals to a 16-9 season and now he’s recovering from an injury so he can finish his 17u season with the North Dakota Attack in a big way.
Seth’s junior season saw him earn second team all-state in football, second team all-state in basketball, and he just finished pitching and playing infield for an 18-6 baseball season. Now, it’s all about working out and getting back to basketball: after recovering from injury.
“I was recently hurt with a fracture on my growth plate of my femur and missed most of the AAU season but am back at full strength and I am planning on going to the final three AAU tournaments with my team on ND Attack,” Seth told Prep Hoops.
“My high school coach just purchased a shooting machine so I will be lifting and playing basketball every morning while attending open gym and camps with my high school team.”
The Cards were 16-9 a year ago, a game away from the state tournament. Nelson returns but many players graduated.
“My team is going to be very young with only two seniors including myself and only one junior,” Seth explained. “We will have a young squad that will have to fill the roster and play some big roles they might not be ready for yet they need a leader to help guide them and I hope to fill that spot.
“Our goal is to reach the region championship again and make it to state!”
One way to get ready for the senior year is by playing with North Dakota Attack. Competing with the Attack against some of the better players in the Midwest helps a talent improve his own game plus builds a foundation to help others. Along the way AAU basketball also helps build friendships with players from outside a community.
“The guys I get to play with on Attack are guys I have come very close with and playing with them has taught me many things,” Seth said. “They all have everything you look for in a player. They all can shoot, pass, and dribble and playing with guys that can do all those things makes the game go smoother.”
Nelson plays with Jaxton Wiest, Jaxon Wiseman, Dante Gunville, and several others on the Attack Blue squad that is ranked 5th in the PHD area.
“On the Attack team I have a much different role then what I have had on my high school team. AAU has taught me to be a more precise dribbler and a smarter passer by always finding the open man when they are open. It has also helped me finish through contact and shoot better because there is always a defender in your face. Competing with and against great players made me an all around better player to bring back to my high school team.”
Playing with the Attack is also preparing Seth for college athletics.
“I play basketball, football, and baseball,” Nelson stated. “I was second team all state in football and basketball this previous year. I’m keeping my options open right as I have had a few basketball and football teams reach out to me and I’m still undecided on what I’m going to do academically.
Nelson said he is hearing from Valley City State, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Bemidji State, Jamestown, Lake Reegion State, Minot State, and the University of Mary for the multiple sports he excels in.
The all-sate honors are nice and the college interest is important. But Nelson is far from satisfied.
“I work daily on a few things such as arch on my three pointers, developing a better jump shot, and ball handling as I will be playing a lot of guard this next high school season,” Nelson stated.
“At open gyms my coach puts a double team on me so I can learn how to work through it still be a threat. Also, I try to be a better defender as that is one of the things I am known for.”
