The 6-foot-6 Ashmore was not available for the Eagles’ first two games Saturday at Barry University’s High School Team Camp but provided major energy in North Broward Prep’s 50-19 rout of Nova High.
The rising junior showed nice footwork, a good handle and was a factor on the boards for head coach Casey Wohlleb. Ashmore & Co. jumped out to a 18-0 lead and led 30-7 by the half.
“He brings size, athleticism, aggressiveness … he moves well,” Wohlleb said. “I really liked how aggressive he was like in one-on-one situations and transition. Just attacking the rim. That lob was all on instinct, just that cut with Dom [Denny].
“He just got back from vacation for like six or seven days. That’s not easy to do, but he was ready.”
Ashmore is a transfer from Somerset Academy in Boynton Beach. He has had to endure a couple of surgeries on his knee due to osteochondritis dissecans disease but says “now everything is good.”
Ashmore grew from 6-2 to 6-6 in the past year.
“I’m going to bring the excitement,” he says, “and offense and defense. Everything I can do to help the team.”
North Broward Prep has also added 2020 guard Alex Villas, a transfer from Highlands Christian and a teammate of Denny’s on the South Florida Elite travel squad.
North Broward Prep also defeated Coral Springs, 60-45, Saturday and lost a tight one with Miami Beach, 54-51.
Denny, a talented 5-10 2020 point guard, and 6-7 2022 Justin Abson continue to show growth from the 2018-19 season.
The shifty Denny uses his quicks to get into the teeth of the defense. He is an excellent driver but will also beat you from deep. Denny has made his defense a priority.
‘We’ve been talking to a lot of people,” Wohlleb said of his recruitment. “A lot of people say they are excited to see him in July. The interest is definitely picking up.”
Abson, meanwhile, looks like he could be a walking triple-double in the future. He has slimmed down and has excelled on the travel circuit with the Nightrydas Elite 15s.
Just a rising sophomore, Abson is an excellent shot-blocker, owns the boards and is a problem when getting the ball down low. How far Abson goes depends on how far his perimeter game develops.
The Barry Team Camp continues Sunday. North Broward Prep (2-1) will play Coral Gables at 9 a.m. and then Miami Braddock at 11 a.m.
The camp semifinals are at 2 p.m. with the championship game at 3 p.m.
