The 2019 Franklin Quaker Slam was highly competitive as always. With top teams from all around Washington, the event made for some fun matchups and previews of what’s to come for next Winter. Prep Hoops was live and direct covering the event and got a good look at nearly all 48 teams in the event. Here is our All-Tournament Team and MVP based off of performance throughout the event.
MVP:
2020 6’1 G John Hart (Rainier Beach HS) – John’s stock has improved this Spring playing with Rotary’s EYBL squad, but he appears to be a man on a mission right now. John’s game has shown a lot of maturity from a year ago, as he is better able to move onto the next play and continue to play hard and be positive no matter what. He was a true energizer bunny for Beach and led his team to the Quaker Slam Title. He showed us the turnaround jumper, some post up game versus less athletic defenders and he was lethal in transition. His biggest moment was dunking on 6’10 C Mitchell Saxen of Ingraham High School. Overall, John was the best player on the best team from the event.
2021 6’7 PF Tyson Degenhart (Mt. Spokane HS) – Tyson was our runner up for the MVP distinction. He scored at will inside and out throughout the event and was just unstoppable at times. He went head to head with Pac-12 recruit Kendall Munson of Rainier Beach and showed off a refined skill set. His footwork and ability to get his shot off with either hand around the basket was very impressive. He kept Mt. Spokane in the game versus Beach, but ultimately fell by single digits in the semis.
2020 6’2 G Micah Monroe (Rainier Beach HS) – The most explosive player in the event. Micah impacted the game in all facets due to his superior athleticism and motor. Micah is always good for game changing plays on offense and defense, but he also displayed an improved handle and looked very comfortable with the ball in his hands. Micah has stated he plans to reclassify and attend Beach next Fall as a member of the 2020 class.
2020 6’0 G Brad Lackey (Union HS) – Union’s team did not necessarily look the part, but they played extremely hard and fundamental basketball all around. Brad Lackey was at the point of it all. He is a confident ball handler and decision maker on the floor. He attacked the basket with aggression and made plays by getting into the paint on a consistent basis.
2021 6’1 PG Leo DeBruhl (Seattle Academy) – The sophomore guard displayed a mixture of explosiveness and skill throughout the event. He scored in transition one play and then got his team into the offense, making good reads on ball screens the next. Leo was without a doubt one of the best guards in the entire event.
2020 5’10 PG Maiu Sze (Roosevelt HS) – Maui handled scoring and facilitating duties for the Roughriders all weekend. He displayed the ability to score 30 points one game and dish out nearly 10 assists the next one. Maui is a seasoned point guard at this stage of his high school career and we’ve come to expect solid performances from him every time he steps on the floor.
