Continue ReadingIt was a little bit of a homecoming a couple of weekends ago for Leo DeBruhl. The solid 6-foot-2, 180-pound point guard grew up in Oregon but he’s now playing at Seattle Academy and he and his team were in town for University of Portland Team Camp. DeBruhl was one of the top performers at the event, continuing on what’s been a great off-season so far for the rising junior.
“With my high school team I feel really comfortable,” DeBruhl said. “We have a lot of sophomore and rising juniors – we all played together last year and we have almost all of our returners, and our chemistry is really good both on and off the court. It’s gone really well because I’ve been able to translate from being from not as much of a main scorer on Rotary to being more of a facilitator, kick out to shooters.”
At the camp, DeBruhl showed a great feel for the game, effectively balancing his own scoring with getting his teammates involved. His play comes off a solid spring AAU campaign with Seattle Rotary’s 16U squad. He was originally starting out on Rotary’s power-packed 17U team but with playing time on that squad a bit more sparse the move back down to his usual age group was the right move for him.
“I thought I’d be able to enjoy my experience more of my second-to-last AAU season on 16U,” DeBruhl said. “That was my team on 15U and they’re my guys – I’ve gotten to know them really well. So it really wasn’t that much of an adjustment. I’m still getting up shots but I’ve been working on getting to the basket more. I’ve also been in the weight room getting stronger so I can go up against the big guys in the EYBL.”
It’s still a little early for DeBruhl when it comes to his college recruitment, but he’s started to hear from a few schools. Seattle and Pepperdine have gotten in direct contact and Portland has shown interest. Santa Clara and San Diego were in touch with the Rotary coaches after the first EYBL session. No offers yet but DeBruhl is staying patient.
“Hopefully those will come from Peach Jam,” DeBruhl said. “I’m just looking for a school that I can fit in really well. A school that wants me – even if it’s a smaller school, just some place that I can fit into really well. I’d love to play on the West Coast – Oregon is my favorite school.”
As Seattle Academy finishes out their June schedule, DeBruhl is looking ahead to the rest of the summer. “My goal is to finish out really well with this team so we can have a little more togetherness,” DeBruhl. “And then hopefully go down to South Carolina and play with my Rotary guys – it will be good to see them again.”
DeBruhl currently ranks as the #21 ranked player in the PrepHoops Washington Class of 2021 rankings.
