Prospect Spotlight: Darren Buchanan Jr. (2022)
If this is the first time you’re hearing the name Darren Buchanan Jr., it certainly won’t be the last. The dynamic 14-year old wing prospect has been one of the most productive players at Capitol Hoops Summer League as he prepares to step into a bigger role at Woodrow Wilson.
“I’ve got a bigger role than I had last year,” said the 6-foot-5, 190-pound rising sophomore. “Our team is very young, but I’ve got the most experience and I have to share that with everybody else.”
Buchanan stands out as solid all-around player who clearly enjoys getting his teammates involved. He rebounds at a high level and has the potential to be an elite defender. Buchanan’s next areas for improvement involve polishing his skill set.
“I need to work on my ball handling, and my jump shot,” he stated. “That’s one thing I’ve been working on for the summer. I feel like I improved with that.”
Collin Sexton is a current player who Buchanan likes watching. He cited Sexton’s ability to persevere through adversity during games. A former player who Buchanan tries to emulate is Kobe Bryant.
“I like Kobe Bryant because he has that kill mentality,” Buchanan explained. “That’s how I try to approach every game. Just ready to kill. Ready to play.”
The Tigers will look to hoist the DCIAA title for the fourth year in a row this upcoming season. Buchanan says his sights are set on winning that trophy and make a run to the DCSAA Championship. What will need to happen in order for him to accomplish these goals?
“Just for all of us to buy in and know why we’re here. And me, having to do more on the court. Getting on the floor, stuff like that.”
