Prospect Spotlight: Christopher Newell (2020)
Currently ranked as #116 in our 2020 state rankings, Christopher Newell is underrated. The Game Elite point guard is averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists this season on the Adidas Circuit. Newell is a solid guard who excels at shooting, passing, and finishing at the rim. At Georgia Cup IV, he showcased his scoring ability as he poured in 20 points against New Level AAU. He was also named to the All-Tournament team at Bob Gibbons this AAU season.
Christopher Newell has great expectations heading into his senior season at the Walker School. He wants to win a state championship while garnering 1st team All- State honors. He looks to lead his team next year alongside Omar Cooper, brother of 5-star recruit Sharife Cooper. Newell and Cooper are anticipated as one of the most dangerous backcourts in Class A next season. Last year, Newell was named to the Region’s Honorable Mention team.
Recently offered by the University of Detroit Mercy, Newell points to his work ethic as the reason for his newfound success. “I put up about a thousand shots a day before Adidas Gantlet. When the time came to play, the goal just seemed to get bigger and bigger after every shot,” he said. As a result, Newell was one of the tournaments leading scorers at 25 points per game. He continued to say, “It just felt great to have good performances all weekend long because I know how much work I put in every day.” If Newell continues working on his game, he has the potential of being one of the best guards in the state.
