For 2022 Gilman guard Christian Winborne, there were ups and downs throughout the season, but he showed time after time the potential to be a really good player in the MIAA A Conference. Now that he has a year under his belt and Jalen Rucker is off to Army, the ball will be in Winborne’s hands more and he’ll be expected to carry a big portion of the offensive load.
“Coach has talked to me and told me I have to take on a bigger role as a leader this coming season,” Winborne told Prep Hoops. “I’m looking forward to stepping up and taking responsibility of that.”
There were time when Winborne started and times he came off the bench last season. Jumping from middle school to the varsity level takes time to adjust to. The speed, physicality and overall IQ isn’t something that just clicks over night. It means making mistakes and learning from them. For Winborne, he soaked in the experience he gained last winter and has seen it carry over into positives this spring and summer with Team Thrill.
“I feel like my game has grown tremendously compared to where I was during the school season,” Winborne said. “I have the ball in my hands a little bit more and can handle it or create opportunities to get my own shot. Also, it gives me an opportunity to actually feel like I’m leading a team.”
I most recently saw Winborne two weeks ago at DMVelite’s Summer Jamboree where he had two strong performances, one notably coming against Philadelphia powerhouse in Roman Catholic. Winborne did an excellent job scoring off the dribble and staying aggressive as a scorer from everywhere on the floor. He took pride in guarding his man on the ball and looked to get out on the break as much as possible.
Not only does Winborne take great pride in his production on the floor, but he also produces in the classroom. To end the school year, he finished with all A’s and one B. No schools have reached out to this point, but once they see all that he can do with the ball in his hands, I have no doubt that they’ll come calling.
