Continue ReadingFern Creek has a strong Sophomore class full of kids ready to contribute this season. Among them, Casey Steadmon may be the most ready to make a big impact this winter. Standing 6’4 and able to play multiple positions, Steadmon is an asset to the Tiger program and has as high of a ceiling as almost anyone in the Sophomore class. Casey summarized his game for me, “I can play point guard through small forward. I’m an 89% free throw shooter. I’ve been told I’m a very good three point shooter. I’m excellent at getting to the basket and scoring. I’m a good rebounder and average around 4 steals per game.” Steadmon also acknowledges the need to improve his ball handling, “My biggest weakness is dribbling with my left hand to the left side.”
Casey was able to see the floor for the varsity in 17 games as a freshman and averaged 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds per game but it was the Freshman and JV games where he did the most damage. Casey said he averaged around 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and a block per game last season in the freshman and JV games. Steadmon is also having a big AAU season. He’s been splitting his time between Hoop Dreams 15u and Kentucky Ambition 15u. He says he’s averaging “about 22 points per game, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks and 2 three pointers per game while still shooting around 89% from the free throw line.” These impressive stats have led to some early interest from college coaches but for the time being, Casey is focused on becoming a better teammate and player. He told me, “Right now I want to improve all of my stats as I grow but I’m working super hard to improve my weaknesses, motivating my teammates and being more of a leader with my words and actions. If Steadmon starts reaching his potential next season, Fern Creek could be a big time contender to get back to Rupp Arena.
